Question:
Has anyone developed "gout" after surgery from eating too much meat?
I usually eat my meat first then veggies and starches to follow if I can consume them. I woke one morning to excruciating pain and was told it was GOUT from eating too much meat. Has this ever happened to anyone? — sexxyshat (posted on February 16, 2009)

I've been told it can result from eating the WRONG meats, like processed
deli meats high in nitrates. But I'm no doctor. You should ask your
nutritionist.

Like I said previously have the labs drawn. They will show if you have
gout or not. And if your current doc isn't doing what you think is
appropriate, as always, find one who will.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but like you, I have gout. You're right, it
is extremely painful. My arthritis doctor hasn't said anything about meat.
Because I'm on a diaretic for another problem, my pcp told me(and yes I
did check it -he's right) that the diaretic raises the uric levels in the
blood. This is what causes the gout. It is also a genitic factor. My
father was on medicine for it.

yes gout can be caused by excess RED meat. along with some of the other
items that have been mentioned, like the shrimp that was also mentioned. Do
get lab work done as gout will show up as high levels of uric acid. There
is medication the doctor can prescribe, allopurinol and colchicine, but
those need to be prescribed by a physician. DO try to increase your water
intake some as well. Good luck with this, gout is very painful, but can be
treated.best wishes, Cora RN
