Question:
Drinking too fast.
I have read by lots of people on here how after RNY it is important to sip sip sip, and can't drink large amounts of liquids at once, especially "gulping something". My question is- they told me this with Lap-Band too, and I found I was able to tolorate liquids after a few months normally. Is it really that different with RNY? Does anyone drink liquids "normally"? — jtaormina (posted on February 10, 2009)

It all depends on what your "normal" is...My "normal"
before surgery would be to gulp down 2-32oz waters in about 15 minutes...I
can no longer do this...I can sit and drink a full 32oz cup in about 30
minutes, I can drink a full 12oz bottle of water in about 10 minutes, but I
must take a mouthful swallow and let it get into my pouch and drain out
before going for another sip, this takes a relatively quick amount of time,
I can usually take a sip and take another sip within a few seconds..

I can drink normally, not a problem at all - but I'm 7 years post op.

Hello, I had my lapband on 12/22 and it can take me hours to drink a 32 oz
drink. Before surgery I could drink 3 or 4 32oz drinks a day. Sometimes I
can't drink cool drinks, sometimes I have to let it sit for a couple of
hours.

I had LapBand 2.5 years ago and can drink normally for the most part. I
don't chug drinks ever. If I have lots of restriction, I do mindfully slow
down, but I never have to sip anymore. Depends on restriction in my
opinion. Always best to be careful and sip away all day.

Sorry if I confused anyone- I meant I do have the Lap Band now and I have
always been able to drink normally- and I am curious what it will be like
with RNY. Thanks!

surgery.

Hi, I'm 5 post months post RNY. I never had a different feeling with
drinking liquids. Maybe the first few days post op, just because of
healing. I can drink a "normal" amount now, or I guess I mean I
can drink liquids like I always did.

I've had RNY 12-12-08. I drink faster than at first, but not nearly as
fast or as long as before RNY. If you drink too fast, or too much, you
throw up. That's been my experience.

Hi ! I drink pretty normal now-8 months out- but in the beginning it hurt.
and if i drink too fast, I get a pressure and then burp alot. There is no
rush...so why go thru it all? So I drink a 16 ounce protein drink in about
30 mins. Early on when I had trouble getting fluids in, I set my timer for
30 seconds and took a very small drink, but bigger than a sip, and
restarted the timer. It worked and trained my body to drink a bit faster.
Good luck to you.

you should sip sip when you first have the surgery -- but as time goes on
and you know how your body operates you can pretty much take it from there
-- i can drink fast and for the most part it doesn't bother me -- but there
are other times it does and i can feel it

I'm not quite 4 mths post-RNY and still can't drink normally yet. Can
definitely drink a LOT faster than I did a few weeks back though, so I
don't worry about it.

I am not having problems drinking liquids. Although since my 1st fill I
may be drinking a little slower but only to allow myself time to
"listen" to what my body is saying about what I'm doing. I want
to know when my pouch becomes full.
