Question:
I am Seven Months Post RNY and still only able to eat soft foods

I am losing weight just fine. I went ot see my surgeon and they are going to do a scope to see what is up. I feel fine, but I get tired of eating only foods that have no texture. Meats and veg tend to come back up after giving me a gut ache for an hour or so. They said I should be able to eat a salad but I would be afraid to try. Has anyone else run into this type of problem?    — trible (posted on January 29, 2009)

I'm not sure but it sounds like you are eating a little too fast, or maybe eating gassy foods. That sounds like what I get after a meal sometimes.

I'm two months post RNY and still cannot tolerate anything outside of soft foods and protein shakes...meats tend to come back up with me as well. My Doctor said that I'm losing just fine. I've already lost 65 pounds. I sure wish I could advance with my eating though. :o) P.S. Unable to eat lettuce..

I am 9 weeks out and having this problem. I was told it may just take a "little time". The surgeon did not seem too concerned last visit. I see him again in 3 weeks. I am using protein drinks to help with the protein issues.

At 7 months, you should be able to eat almost anything. I am 7 months out and only have problems with a few things like animal fat and dry meats...everything else gows down good, unless I eat way too fast or I eat and drink too close to each other... But everyone is different and maybe it will just take longer for you...I would definately try one new food a day and see how each item goes within a day....like instead of trying to eat meat and veg, just try the meat and make sure to moisten in so it slides better...no veg...next time try a veg as a snack in between your normal soft proteins and see if it goes down better...I still have problems with raw veggies...sometimes they go down sometimes they don't...Eat slowly so you can tell how the food is reacting...I found that listening to my body and giving it time to react has helped cut down on indigestion and reguritation issues, I would be willing to bet you are swallowing too much air and that is why you are having problems...the air takes up so much space and the food has no where to go.. Good luck and take it very slow and try try...and try again..

I have a similar issue. It is thought that my stomach is inflamed. I'm taking prevacid twice a day. I have pain all the time eating or no eating. Do you have that problem? If it doesn't get better, I will need to have the same procedure to see if there is an infection in my stomach. I'm hoping that the prevacid will work out. How is your quality of life in general? Are you active? I'm not as active as I was before the surgery.

I feel fine and am very active. I do not have any pain unless I eat something that does not agree with me. I did have a problem with constant pain in Oct and they found an ulcer. Once I took the protonic and caraffate for a couple months that is better. I eat lots of beans and cheese or milk to keep the protein up. I take protonic for an ulcer. I do cut meat and veg very small before eating and eat slowly. I hope they will find something fixable. Otherwise I guess I can live on these foods. It is just a limited diet. Good thing milk is not a problem.
