Question:
I have NO taste buds....has anyone else had this happen?
It's quite sad. Either I don't taste anything (which includes smell too) or it's distorted. I can smell SOMEthing but can't figure out what it is. Maybe this has nothing to do with my RNY, which was five years ago, but it drives me crazy. Thanks :o) Debbie — Debbie N. (posted on October 15, 2008)

Hi Debbie,
My mother use to complain about that all the time and over the years we
figured out that she had a sinus infection. How sad for her that it took
so long for us to figure it out. I wonder if you would be experiencing the
same thing?
Best of luck.

I read about a similar case online. It appears this lady had a bad cold
that turned into a sinus infection and she also lost her taste and smell.
She took prescribed med but nothing helped her. It had been 5yrs before
she figured it out as well... Don't recall the medical term. You might
want to go online on MDWEB or any other site and see if you can find the
medical term for it.

I am not trying to scare you but see your dr. my son cannot smell, and as
soon as the dr. found out he sent him for a cat scan of his brain, it
didn't show anything wrong, but you never know, better be safe than sorry.

I have heard that anesthesia can sometimes interfere with taste and smell.
There are also some medical conditions that can effect it as well. I would
recommend a workup with your PCP to be on the safe side.

Have you been to an ENT doctor (ears, nose, throat)? I would guess it has
something to do with your nose more so than RNY.
