Question:
I have been diabetic for 10 years and am almost 63 years old.
What ages are those of you who had diabetes and 'lost it' after the rny surgery, and how soon did you lose it? I thought it pretty much got rid of diabetes but some are saying it just cut down their meds. — SkinnyLynni2B (posted on May 6, 2008)

I had Lap Band 4-16-08 and on 4-18-08 my insulin was reduced over 50%. I
know as I lose more weight I will probably lose the other 50% or go back to
oral meds. I am 59 years old. Anything that lessens what I take is very
good for me. The gastric bypass you can lose it pretty fast but with the
lap band is gradual.

I had my RNY on 7/30/07 and had diabetes when I was admitted to the
hospital. Once I was home (three days later) my sugars were normal and have
remained so. As a matter of fact my PCP no longer considers me a diabetic
although I DO continue to monitor it daily for my own self satisfaction if
nothing else. I've had 3 A1C's done since surgery and all have come back in
the normal range. In the 9 months since surgery, I've lost 113 pounds!.

Lyn, I had gastric bypass 9/11/08 ( I was 303#'s & had been diabetic
for only 6 months). When I left the hospital the nurses told me that my
sugars were normal & not to take glucovance. I think that I was so
early into diagnoses that the fast weight loss of five days in teh hospital
did it. That does not mean that I am not prone to it later in life. Lori

Hi...I was 40 when I had my RNY surgery...I had type II diabetes...I was
given two shots daily after my surgery (I had open RNY and was on a
morphine drip so they did them for me!) After the second day...They came in
and said my sugars were normal and By the 4th day whenI was released they
said not to worry about insulin anymore...It's been 4 years! My last HGB
A1C in Feb 08 was 5.3...It's gone!

I had RNY 3/31/08. My blood sugars ran around 140 prior to the surgery.
I've been completely off diabetes medication for a week and a half and my
average blood sugar since then has been 83. I had type II diabetes and was
never on insulin.

I had surgery April 2nd and have lost 13 lbs post surgery so far... My
insulin like Diane has been cut in half since surgery. We're hoping that I
eventually won't need insulin but we unfortunately think my pancreas is
burned out and I'll be on it the rest of my life. We will see though. I'm
still looking for that light at the end of the tunnel.

How well your diabetes is controlled by the surgery will depend on many
factors such as how well you follow the diet, how much weight you lose and
your body in general & how it reacts. I had lap band 4/19/07. I have
lost 75 lbs. My last A1C was 5.3 (normal) and Dr says I no longer need to
check my sugars.

The RNY intestinal bypass portion is being tried on normalk weight type 2s
to cure of fix their diabetes. the shorter the time you have been type 2
the better the fix rate about 95%. but 5% of all type 2s are normal weight.
If your type 2 a long time the fix rate drops to 75%, those often require
less meds. Its not 100% but what in life is:( This all from my doc Dr

Lyn,
I am 62 and have had diabities for 25 years. I had surgery on my 62nd
birthday, December 5, 2007. I was off insulin when I went home from the
hospital and the other 9 drugs were causing me to have low blood sugar
crashes, so about a week later they took me all but one. I still had low
blood pressure crashes, so they took me off all drugs by the end of three
weeks. I maintain a normal blood sugar now, and my A1C is 5.6. RNY is the
secret of the diabite cure. The move that part of your small intestine
that absorbes fat, sugar, and carbs, so it is conected to deliver stomach
acid to the last third of your small intestine. That is why with RNY you
have to take bariatric vitamins and Iron. It creates minor mal-nutrition.
Worth every penny I paid for the surgery and I would do it all over again.
I can't describe how much better I am doing, but I went from a couch patato
to going to the gym every day and playing golf twice a week. Best of
success to you.

I'm 61 and have been a diabetic for more than 15 years. I had my Lap. RNY
on Feb 18 and have lost 54 pounds. My insulin has been cut in half and
other medicines reduced as well. I'm hoping to get off all my medicine in
the next 3-6 months.

I had DS in Oct. '06. At the time I was taking oral meds for my diabetes
and two different meds for hbp. I haven't taken my diabetes meds since Jan.
'07, and my numbers are always normal. And my hbp meds have been reduced by
more than 2/3.

I have been a diabetic since 1988. I had the bypass in Oct. 2007 and have
lost 112 lbs so far. I came home from the hospital after surgery with out
any medication - I was on oral medication only. My A1C has been 5.6 monthly
ever since surgery. Depending on the type of medication you are on you will
come off immediately or be tapered off very quickly.
Good luck & God Bless
