Question:
I have several questions of course...the first two are:
1 - what is the average cost for the open Roux en Y (not sure if this is the correct spelling) and 2 - what kind of scars are left behind...Thanks! — KK_4_Ever (posted on January 30, 2007)

Kayla, I have been told that the cost is approximately $20,000, I guess
that depends on where you have it done also. If you have it done
laparascpicaly, you have about six small incisions on your belly, if you
have open , you will have a larger incision down the middle. Is there a
reason you have to pay out of pocket for it?

I cannot give you a cost since my insurance covered the entire operation
including the doctor's charge but the hospital billed my insurance company
$21k - the insurance only paid about $3600 of that as payment in full. The
doctor usually charges about $5000 on average. You will have 5 tiny
incisions that heal nicely and you probably won't have any type of scar to
speak of.

i was told the total cost is about $50,000, but if you are self pay you get
a major discount. with laproscopic you only have about 5 small incisions,
but if for some reason it has to be open it is a major incision from the
upper part of your belly to the very bottom of your belly with staples to
close it. hope this answers your questions. holly

While considering costs realize about 1/3 of OPENS get at least one hernia,
LAP the rate is near zero. This number from my surgeon dr philip schauer
head of the ASBS. Also confirmbed by posters here

As the previous answer said you do have less chance of hernia when you have
it done laprascopic(sp?) but you have a less chance of leakage with open.
With a 4 year old in my house I wanted to do it anyway that was less
leakage risk. My surgery was done in Iowa and my cost was about $22,500
(with no complications) and I have a scar running from by belly button up
to right under my breast line. Alot of time after the tummy tuck most of
that scar is gone.

Hi Kayla. From my understanding, open RNY would probably cost you $35,000,
and the scan is from your sternum to as low as they need to go to complete
the surgery. This depends on how heavy you are and the size of your liver
at the time I think. Probably the smallest scar is about 10". It is
a big scar and a big surgery. Patricia P

My surgeon said the scare will be from 3-5 inches so I guess it depends on
the surgeon.

As to leakage my surgeon says the rate is under 1 to 2% eitherway, leakage
is more likely if you are a smoker:( Much depends on the skill of the
surgeon.

Kayla, if I was paying out of pocket my concern would certainly be the cost
of the procedure, but also take into consideration if something should go
wrong. What if you were hospitalized for an extended period of time as
well? Good Luck!

I had a Lap RNY done I was self pay. The hosptial was $20,000 and the
surgeons fee was $4,800.00 (which was discounted because I paid cash). All
total was $24,800.00 This was done last July of 2006 in Pascagoula,
Mississippi. I did not have any complications. My largest of 5 scars is
about 1-1/2 inches long, low on the left side where the largest instrument
was inserted.
