Question:
Flatulence - should I have it?
I left an earlier question regarding flatulence and it's stinkiness. I neglected to say that I'm 2 years out. I tend to eat a lot of stuff that has a lot of fat in it (candies) and I'm wondering if that could have anything to do with it. If anyone can give me a definitive answer, I would really appreciate it. I'm getting very embarassed by it and afraid to go out in public anymore. I'm only guessing that the fat issue has something to do with it - I'm not sure. Thank you in advance. — devenny99 (posted on March 1, 2006)

Joyce, if you are eating lots of S/F candy, you are consuming manitol.
Manitol is very much none to cause severe gas and smell. I also find if I
eat to many carbs, gas is a bigger problem then when eating meats,
vegetables and fruits. Dana

you should not be eating candy. this is what most likely got you in the
position of having WLS. you need to contact your dietician, and she can
help you.

yep candy wil do it. anything other than protein, veg and fruit. If your
lactose int. milk products will do it. Its normal to have 'a little' but
if your tummy' rumbling - its most likley some food you ate doing it. I
notice it more if I eat things I know I wouldnt have eaten newly post.

If I eat anything with sugar alcohol (maltilol, sorbitol) I get thw worst
gas ever. So stay away from sugar-free candy. Besides they have zero
nurtition value and are still wayy high in calories. I wish someone woul
post what they have used the actually helped fight of the everyday non
sugar alcohol gas.

I'm almost 2 yrs po and still have major gas issues as well. I find protein
does it for me as well as too many carbs. So mostly anything I eat or drink
causes it. My kids say, Mommy you stink.....lol! But if this is the worse
side effect long term for losing this amount of weight, I guess I can live
with it (eww). I took Deverom, but it didn't help me.....maybe doing it 3
times a day everyday would help, who knows.

Dear Joyce,
I have the same problem. Am 3 years out. Compound that with weak muscles
below after childbirth. I accept the fate, however, it has at times been
an embarrassment.

Test your theory by not eating candy for a while (I don't eat it at all,
because I am afraid that I will love it again.) See if stopping the candy
stops the problem. Experiment with eating/not eating different foods to
find out which ones give you smelly gas.
