Question:
getting a cold

I am do to have Surgary 5 days from today. I woke up this morning with a sore throat the kind you get before a cold onsets. Do you think this will stop my surgary. Any suggestions on what to take to get rid of it fast.    — Tina G. (posted on January 25, 2006)

I would go to Walgreens and get "air-borne" immediately. Drink this a few times each day and you should be okay for surgery. Also, taking double doses of vitamin C also works.

Yes, yes- drink that or even theraflu will help. Main thing is to avoid fevers. A cold will not stop surgery but the presence of a fever will. And honestly you wouldn't want you system overtaxed. If it makes you feel any better I had a cold when I went to surgery. In fact on the way out the door my son threw-up twice, he had influenza. I was scared I would come down with that just after having had surgery. But all went well.

I would belay all that advice and do ONE thing- CALL YOUR SURGEONS OFFICE! There is not necessarily a reason to expect that a cold will delay your surgery, but there IS reason to expect that if you start taking things that the doctor doesn't want you taking before surgery (even OTC stuff!) they WILL postpone! So, make the call and get the advice of your doctor as to what to take. They may even be willing to prescribe something for you. Good lck.

Walgreens sells a great product called Zicam. Buy the nose swabs and follow the instructions. These have prevented me from getting a full blown cold many times in the past. My kids won't do it, and they end up getting sick. Wonderful product!! Good luck!

Yes, you need to contact your doctor's office and see if you can get on any type of medication. I woke up with a lot of drainage and a sore throat the morning of my surgery and chose not to tell my doctor for fear my surgery would be cancelled. When I woke up from surgery, I had to battle all that drainage without the aid of something to drink for 24 hours. Plus, it ended up in my chest and trying to cough it up was excrutiating! Seek help NOW!

I have surgery in a little over a week and I have a cold. I called my surgeon's office and they told me that the only thing I could take was Tylenol Cold. Between that and drinking lots of hot tea I seem to be getting better! Good luck!

Most diffinitely donot take OTC prior to surgery, those med can remain in your system for several days after you take them and affect you, a aperin has life of 3 days in your blood. a thinner. take one today, and every day for the next 5, and you could bleed to death. you just dont know whats hidden in a formulation of OTC junk. ZI Cam, whats Old is NEW again, was a old wive remedy until the 50's when it was discovered that zinc in the nasal cavity also permanenly caused a decrease in the sense of smell and teaste, go for it, there thats another way to loose weight. food wont taste good any more.
