Question:
Pre-op I had severe joint pain in the knees. However, 3 weeks post-op & 20 lbs. down
my legs are weak and I have severe pain. Tylenol arthritis doesn't really help. Before surgery I had trouble walking for exercise so I did water aerobics. I have started water aerobics again but my legs are worse than ever when I'm walking on solid ground. Is this to be expected? — rjfp04 (posted on January 18, 2006)

Well Jenny- there is good news, and bad news. Joint pain, whether knees,
hips, shoulders, arthritis, or whatever, all of us are different. Some
lose the pain shortly after WLS, others, for whatever reasons, since we are
losing the weight, we are also losing that extra padding surrounding the
joint, which causes more pain. Have you looked into having replacement?
Talkwith your doctor, not all arthritis pain medicines are created equal
and maybe you need something different than an over the counter
anti-inflammatory. Don't wait to see if the pain gets better, because its
too hard to exercise-walk the way you are. have it checked out now and
possibly get something that will help you more. I wish you luck. I am
waiting on a hip, knee and shoulder replacement, and because of the WLS
cannot take those antiinflammatories any longer and it takes mega doses of
regular pain pills to even scratch the surface of the pain. You may be
more lucky,. and I hope you are. Congrats on the weight loss.

Another reason for leg pain is that , when we lose weight, our weight pulls
on our joints and muscles differently, and distributes differently. So our
joints and muscles need to adjust.

Gretings,
I had isues similar to yours as well. I found that I was using my legs in
different ways to get out of bed/chair in order to baby my stomach. Well I
ended up messing up one of my knees/legs pretty good. It took a couple of
weeks for it to get better.
Check with your Doc if you think it may be more.
Hang in there!
