My surgeon says once were off the narcotic pain meds completely. If the anthestic muddles your mind its best to wait till that goes away too. For ME it was less than a week.

I drove at exactly one week...for my one week post-op follow-up. My surgeon lifted ALL restrictions off of me at that time, including driving.

I waited 2 weeks. My husband was home with me so I didn't need to drive. I probably could have sooner if I needed to. The pain meds as mentioned are a big factor. No one should be driving under the influence!!!

I was told I could drive home from the hospital if I wasn't on pain medicine.

As with other surgeries, in theory you could drive home from the hospital if you were not on pain meds. However, I was told that you should be comfortable enough pain wise, to be able to stop short (jam on the brakes) or make a really quick reaction if needed. I was in no shape to do that on my way home LOL!!!!

Our surgeon told us that we could drive as soon as we were no longer taking any pain medications. For some of us, that was three days, for others it was approximately a week. Best wishes!

I had an open RNY on a Friday, and drove on the following Wednesday. Usually its when you are no longer on pain meds. To be safe ask your doctor!!!!

Check with your auto insurance company. Each company has a specific length of time you must wait after surgery for your insurance to cover you while driving. The length of time required by your insurance company is probably NOT the same length of time required by your surgeon.

My doctor said at leasst one week, and that I should also be off pain meds. I drove for the first time 12 days after lap rny. I didn't need to drive before then because I was staying with my parents until day 10.
