Question:
XENICAL QUESTION, I JUST STARTED AND I HAVENT NOTICED A DIFFERANCE AT ALL IS IT WORKI
I JUST STARTED AND I HAVE HEARD FROM MANY PEOPLE THAT IT CAUSES YOU TO RUSH TO THE BATHROOM AND I JUST STARTED YESTERDAY AND HAVENT NOTICED A DIFFERANCE AT ALL IS IT WORKING OR WHAT? HAS ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE HAD IT WORK WITHOUT SIDE EFFECTS? — DBXX (posted on December 5, 2002)

I tried Xenical several times prior to surgery. It never made me
"run" to the bathroom but you DO have to be careful. Xenical
prevents your body from absorbing a certain quantity of fat that you
consume. Instead of absorbing it, the Xenical gathers the fat together and
you eliminate it when you go to the bathroom. If you are eating a low fat
diet to begin with, you may never see any side effects from the Xenical.
However, if you splurge a bit and eat something high in fat, you will
DEFINATELY see the side effects for yourself. I always thought of Xenical
as an incentive to stick with the low fat diet. It was rather effective in
my case. I wish you luck with it.

When I first started taking it, it took a couple of days before I could
'see' any results. If you aren't eating much fat, you won't notice a
difference.

I tried Xenical last year (or maybe earlier...it was soon after it came
out). I took it for 2 days & threw the rest out! Sorry but it just WAS
NOT my thing! I realize that I must've eaten a fatty food, but the
explosive reaction from my digestive tract within a short period of time
was outrageous. Thank God I was at home..no kidding...if you think you have
gas...think again...go immediately to the bathroom...do not wait...it was
nastyeeeee! Sorry..don't mean to be crass, just telling you why it wasn't
for me.
Not only the urgency problem but the smell was so hideous that I could
hardly breathe...I thought something died inside.
I did have my gallbladder out (about 20 years ago now) & things do tend
to go thru me quicker, so I don't know if this is comparable to someone
with a regular digestive tract.
Good Luck to you...I hope it works for you & I would say that if you
haven't noticed anything different yet you're probably eating very little
fat...didn't mean to sound so cynical either, it's just every time I see
the word Xenical, it brings back that lovely experience!

I took Xenical for just short of 2 months. If I carefully watched my fat
intake it wasn't too bad, just looser somwhat smellier stools. But eat any
quanitity of fat and look out. Twice I had accidents and let me tell you
the smell is enough to kill you. I finally stopped because all it did was
make me scared to eat fat. So I found other things to eat, which meant my
weight stayed the same.<p>It wasn't a solution I could stick with. I
wish you all the best with your try of the medication. If you are able to
stick with it they have a good on-line support system and you can get 3 or
6 months free after you buy the first group.

I agree with all the other replies. Everyone's digestive system is
different and reacts differently. Myself, I couldn't take it for too long.
After one major accident (at work no less), take the advise of
others---don't ever assume it is gas and head immediately to the closest
restroom. After that one incident, I made a point to keep spare underwear
wherever I was. Good Luck.

Danielle, I have not had the surgery because my BMI is too low to qualify.
I have been taking xenical for a month and a half. For me it started
working on the 2nd day after I started it. If I eat low fat I don't have
that much of a problem with having to rush to the bathroom, but if I eat
higher fat then Watch Out! In fact, lots of times I don't even feel the
urge; it just leaks out. The only way I can deal with this is to wear pads
just as if I was on my period. This prevents me from messing up my
underwear. When I have soiled a pad I just change pads. Yes, its a
hassle, but the great thing about it for me is that before taking xenical
if I lost say, 4 or 5 pounds, I didn't notice any difference in how my
clothes fit; whereas, with taking xenical it seems that with each pound I
lose I can physically see myself getting smaller and my clothes fitting
looser. I don't quite understand how come its this way, but whatever the
reason, its wonderful and it makes taking the xenical worthwhile to me for
a short time anyway. I may stay on it for 6 or 8 months total. Hopefully
I'll be at goal by then. Best of luck to you.

I was on xenical and I hated it! I gained on it and i barley ate! My
doctor said it was my thyroid that caused it but when i did eat i was
sooooooo sick. it was the nastiest stuff i was ever on. i hope it works
better for you than it did for me! good luck!

I tried Xenical for almost 1 month. I do not eat much fat so when I didn't
see much effect from it I decided to push it and I ate KFC. If anything
should have gotton a response that should have right? Well, it didn't and I
noticed that I went from having a couple of BMs each day to actually
skipping days! The worst part is I felt bloated and yucky! Needless to say,
I quit taking it after about 3 weeks, (the Dr wanted me to give it a
chance!!!). Good luck to you, be careful. God Bless!

I tried Xenical about three years ago and it did not work for me. I don't
eat much fat but any fat I did consume came spilling out my body like a
fountain! It was gross, expensive and unfortunately, did not work for me.
I used for 6 weeks and did not lose one pound but managed to ruin a few
dresses with my 'oil leaks.'

I was on Xenical for 6 weeks, and it did hardly anything for me, but giving
me those embarassing "oil stains" no matter how much you cut
your fat intake you will still have that problem with it. I find from alot
of ppl I have talked to it has done lil or nothing for them and is a lost
cause.
