Question:
a very long time ago, i remember hearing about mouth wiring as a method to losing
weight...i am curious to know is this still an acceptable way to help with weight loss, and if so, where are the surgeons located who do this....... — [Anonymous] (posted on January 5, 2000)

I can tell you from experience about mouth wiring. Actually, they wire your
jaws shut. It`s just like having braces but the top and bottom jaws are
wired together. It is painful to have them put in and even more painful to
have them removed. I had my jaws wired shut and lost 100 lbs. To be
pefectly honest, the weight came back on faster than I lost it. As soon as
I started eating regular food again, the pounds piled back on. I lived on a
liquid diet until I decided to clip the wires myself. The doctor provided
me with a pair of wire cutters in case of vomiting or choking and I put
them to use. My friend actually gained weight because she drank EVERY thing
through a straw, mashed potatoes, gravy,
shakes, you name it. Needless to say, I would not recommend this kind of
diet to anyone. It just leads to more weight gain !

My understanding is that it originated in England where it is not longer
performed, and no longer legal here. Complete and total failure. 100%
weight regain. Also, imagine vomiting like this??? I considered this long
ago, too. But this was is SO MUCH EASIER.

I had my mouth wired shut about 15yrs. ago i took my own
wires out one Holloween night just to have a milkyway bar
it took three pairs of pliers to do it.I was always sick
and everything had to be blended or pureed.
The dr.'s never followed up with me either,as far as they know i still have
them.

I had my jaws wired in 1995, and I lost about 30 pounds and gained 60.
This is not something I would recomend to anyone. The first time my wires
came apart was on a weekend, so I had to wait until Monday to see the
doctor. I then learned that I could cut my own wires, and then wire it
back without anyone knowing I had done this. Finally, I gave up and took
the wires off myself, because I was too ashamed to see the doc...didn't
want him to know that I had not lost any weight. This was VERY
painful...not only taking them off, but just plain having them period. I
had a gastric bypass a year later, and lost 130lbs....so much better!!
