Question:
Has anyone had Gastric bypass who suffer from IBS/Colitis?
I have IBS/Colitis and was wondering if you have IBS is the dumping sydrome worse or any other side affects due to this condition. My wife and I am thinking of having the surgery. Thanks — bciman (posted on December 16, 2010)

It's hard to say cuz every body is so different. I've had IBS since I was a
child. After surgery I get no dumping at all. I had it once 2 weeks post op
I drank to much juice and dumped for about 20 min. I never had it again. My
IBS is alot better as well. If I stay away from milk I feel great. Feel
free to contact me with any other questions.

I've never had IBS/Colitis, but I did learn during pre-surgery classes that
many patients who do have them actually improve after surgery. As for the
dumping syndrome, I don't think you can actually predict how bad it will
get because the severity or lack there of is very individual. I have only
done it a handful of times since my surgery 3 months ago and each time it
was because I ate too fast or ate something I wasn't yet allowed. Good
luck whatever choice you make.

My IBS is much better - I had the form of diareahea(SP) and only have real
problems if I have too much dairy... I am 2 years post op... no dumping
here either (I wish) and only have foamies if I eat too much or too fast..

I suffered from IBS pre-surgery. I had RNY two and a half years ago, and
haven't had IBS since. I've never experienced the constipation that others
have either.

I didn't have gastric bypass; I had the Duodenal Switch, but I can tell you
that my DS cured my IBS. And I've heard many many people with DS say the
same thing. Those with DS surgery do not experience dumping syndrome at
all, but with RNY I really don't think dumping and IBS would be related in
any way.

Prior to surgery I suffered IBS. I had surgery 5 months ago. I have
experienced dumping due to eating things I knew I should not. I do
experience constipation and have to take stool softeners and laxatives.

Mine is cured/gone away since having the surgery 8 months ago. I have not
had any dumping syndrome either and I am within 20 pounds of my goal weight
of 120.

Hi! Good question! I had IBS (with diarreah) prior to my gbs and since
surgery 2.5 yrs ago I never have constipation and rarely have diarreah. I
do get dumping...it is like ibs in that it can be urgent. But I only get
dumping if I consume too much sugar or sugar alcohols. Needless to say I
monitor my intake so as not to suffer from this. Dumping symptoms vary from
person to person and time to time..I usually have like a hot flash with
sweating etc and a bloasted feeling and gurgling belly then I have to run
to the bathroom. Its not pleasant, but to me...its worse than the IBS I
had. Good luck to you on your journey! hugs n God Bless, Kim
