Question:
Is there anything I can add to protein powder to cut the taste?
I am one-week pre-op RNY Gastric Bypass. I started my pre-op liquid diet today and I have to drink 4 shakes of unflavored Unjury in 8 oz of fruit juice. I can also have broth, as well as s/f popsicles, jello and of course water. The unflavored Unjury tastes horrible to me. I have been experimenting with protein powders, and haven't been able to find any that I can drink. I know I have to do it, so for now, I'm just holding my nose and forcing them down but would love to know if there's anything I can put in them to cut that "protein powder" taste?? I would love any and all suggestions!! — Clumsybarbie (posted on August 8, 2010)

Sugarfree jello is wonderful in the protein shakes. I recommended
raspberry.

I mix my unflavored Unjury with no sugar added hot chocolate. I cannot
tell the difference. I also added the chocolate and vanilla to decaf coffee
for a vanilla or mocha latte flavor. I have been using it since day 3 and I
am almost exactly a year out with 110 pounds gone. I also used Isopure
which is clear and I mixed it half and half with crystal lite. Hope that
helps. Good luck on your journey.

Do you have to use the Unjury? If not, Bariatric Fusion and Bariatric
Advantage both have great flavors. Both of these have 25-27 grams of
protein and only about 150 calories per scoop. I love the Strawberry
Shortcake by Bariatric Fusion. I mix with ice for a shake, mix with sugar
free pudding, it is really good. All of the flavors that I have tried are
very good and do not have that nasty after taste. Good luck!

I add crystal light to stuff. And if your doc will let you try other
brands.. look into Syntrax Nectar. I like it much better than other stuff.
I mix it with CL or powerade zero. The Syntrax people will sell you
samples at a reasonable price.. or they did some time ago.

I use Chike and NOW protein, and I add milk with mine. My Dr. says NO to
fruit juice so I can't help you there. The unflavored protein was
horrendous for me. I really like my shakes, however they make my bloated
and gassy. I can't tolerate meat so I supplement with one shake a day. I
also have to use Proteinex, because I am having a time of keeping weight
on. My NUT wants me to have 80 grams of protein a day.
Good luck!

I too couldn't stand Unjury. It's the only protein powder that actually
made me hurl. Fortunately my doc prescribed OptiFast for the pre-op liquid
diet. Call and ask your doc if you can switch to another brand. Also, I was
told that our taste buds change after surgery and what you don't like now
may be tolerable later and vice versa so hang on to what you have now so
you can try it again later. If you haven't already, send off for the free
samples of protein powders, etc. Good luck to you on your surgery.

You taste buds will continue to change. I couldn't tolerate most protein
powders post op. Keep trying different brands. Go back to the ones you
didn't like every other week or so. I finally settled on Isopure, but I
couldn't stand it one week post-op. Now I actually like it! Try watering
it down - I like mine the consistency of chocolate milk - too thick and I
can't get it down. Try using a cup with a lid - I use the cup and lid from
dunkin donuts large coffee. Putting a lid on it cuts the smell. You can
mix the protein in Jello pudding, too. If you have an ice cream maker, you
can use it in ice cream recipes as well as frozen yogurt recipes.

I absolutely LOVE Syntrax Nectars protein powders....most especially the
Twisted Cherry, the Vanilla Bean Torte, and the Chocolate Truffle. With
the chocolate and vanilla, I add either a teaspoonful of decaf coffee
crystals, or the sugar-free DaVinci syrups (can be gotten for a terrific
price from their website) - or I believe Marshalls stores sell them for
about $5.50. And the Twisted Cherry is just delicious and refreshing.

If you like chocolate try their chocolate. I love my Unjury I have used it
for years now. I also found that adding a couple of teaspoons of malted
milk powder (it comes in vanilla and chocolate) it adds a lot of flavor
(adds like 25 calories though) and I use sugar free syrups. My hubby puts a
packet of sweet and low in his shakes. You really just need to experiment
and hopefully you will find something but you may not like it after your
surgery as some peoples tastes change after.

Great question! I don't have a suggestion, but to those who suggested
using with SF jello or pudding or Crystal Light--how much of those do you
mix into the shake?

When adding sugar free pudding to a shake, I use about 1/3 of a (small)
box. someone also suggested adding 1/2 cup of egg whites for extra
protein. I buy Nu-laid, egg white mixture which is pastuerized. They
carry it at Trader Joe's. FYI...you might try "Medi-fast" shakes.
You can order online...I found them palatable...Blessings to you for a
smooth and uneventful surgery! You're going to be soooo glad you did it! :)

I used the sugar free coffee flavorings and cooking flavorings. After I
had RNY I couldn't find any protein that I could stand so I drank Profect
and held my nose, almost threw up every time but I knew I had to do it. I
now drink the Kirkland brand chocolate protein drink from Costco. Good
luck! It will be all worth it!

go to BellPlantation.com they have this product called PB2. Less fat and
calories. But has 5 grams protein in 2 Tablespoons. Add this to your
shake..gives it a yummy and no after taste. Have you tried Chobani greek
yogurt? Add half scoop unflavoured protein powder and some sugar free jello
pudding to the mix.

Do you have to add it to fruit juice? If so, I would recommend coring a
granny smith apple and putting it all in a blender. You won't taste the
apple but it will help eliminate the taste that some protein has...if you
can add to other things like some of the chocolate suggestions, try adding
a little peanut butter...it helps eliminate the protein taste, also. Be
sure to talk to your nut and/or doctor first, though...good luck!
