Question:
Any last second tips/suggestions for packing for hospital?

I am having RNY surgery in the morning. I am packing and would love any tips/suggestions that you would be willing to share with me...also, any tips/suggestions for the big day and the days in the hospital...I thank you so much! Lisa CW230/GW150.    — Lisa Friday (posted on October 22, 2009)

honestly, I packed a book and a crossword and some other stuff for my surgery and I never got to them. I took my binder with all my weight loss info given to my by my surgeon and a new journal and other than watching a little bit of tv, I didn't do much besides walk around my room, the halls and sleep. I journalled my last day there, I really recommend journalling if you enjoy that type of thing. I'm glad I did and I'm only 4.5 months out. dont forget your toothbrush and deoderant :) good luck, you'll do great!

If all goes well with your surgery, you could be out the next day. I was. I was taking my liquids fine, walking, not a problem. So they sent me home, they said they couldn't do anything for me except the morphine pump, so I took one last dose of that for the road, but do bring a pillow to put over your stomach for the pot holes in the road. That hurts. Hopefully your driver can avoid them, sometimes you don't see them. so sit with the pillow over your abdomen. You might not be there long enough but to eat, sleep and walk. I wanted to go home, I was in the room with an elderly lady that was very vocal and had the heater up to 85 degrees. I couldn't wait to go home. Hospital care was great, I would have loved to stay. Best wishes to you and don't forget your pillow. You will thank me later. LOL

Toothbrush/paste, deodorant, hairbrush, comfy clothes to wear home (I wore loose to the hospital), small pillow to hold over your tummy for breathing exercises and the ride home. They gave me nonskid socks and I wore their beautiful gown cuz I didn't want to mess mine up. You'll be sleeping a lot when you're not walking. I had my tv on, but couldn't tell you what was on. Hope this helps. Good luck on your journey. See ya on the loser's bench.

Try not to worry to much! I had braced myself for a MUCH worse experience than what my surgery turned out to be. THANK GOD! I hope that the same holds true for you. :) The way I look at this......as everything else in my life...I prepare myself for the worst, but hope for the best. In the case of MY surgery...I was one of the lucky ones. I was even able to drive 4 days post op! (Shhh...don't tell my docs that) And that doesn't mean that everyone should do that, either. Ohhhh, I've told on myself...I'm such a bad girl! lol Good luck and God bless!

Good info here already. I definitely had a dry mouth while they withheld liquids, so a mild mouthwash and LIP BALM were my best friends. Good luck to you!

Congratulations - you will be in my prayers. Slippers that are comfy for walking were key - the more I walked, the better I felt. I agree with the toothbrush, etc., and if you use a CPAP - don't forget to bring it (at least my hospital wanted me to have mine).

I brought my music with me and a set of headphones. I find that praise and worship music comforts me and gives me joy. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. God Bless.

This isn't for the hospital, but a God-send when you get back home: a magic bullet from Walmart. It's a small blender that can puree your food for that part of the diet or mix up your protein shakes. Seven months out and I still use mine every day for shakes.

I just got home from the hospital, and I forgot my own pillow and phone charger. So my advice is, make sure if it your special things. you come home with them. My friends packed me up, so I guess that they thought my white pillow belonged to the hospital. Good luck and may God be with you.
