Question:
I am 4 weeks post-op and doing great but after the second week got gout in both feet.
Can anyone relate to this and have any suggestions on how to avoid having it again? sunshine — Sunshine0610 (posted on November 13, 2008)

I had exactly the same thing happen. I couldn't walk without crutches and
ended up in the emergency room of the local hospital because I thought I
had broken my ankle or something. I never had anything so painful!!!
My doctor prescribed some medication that I take when I have flair ups. It
doesn't happen as often anymore and it has been a while since I have a
problem. Also they say to drink cherry juice, although I never tried
this!!!!

I had it in my big toe on my right foot and thought it was rotting off from
something terrible I had done. It went away after a few days and a few
pills and I never had it or WANT it again. It is a byproduct of diabetes,
another nasty word. There is a diet to go by to keep it from coming back
but many of the things they don't want you to have for gaut are things we
need to eat to keep us healthy, if we have had wls. Allopurinol is a med I
took every dat to keep from having flare ups and I guess it worked. My
diabetes almost completely disappeared after te surgery so I have stopped
taking it. Good luck on never welcoming that 'bad boy' again. Lyn

This sometimes happens after WLS due to losing weight so fast. Be sure you
are getting in plenty of liquids to help flush your system.

You may want to look it up on the net. I believe it has something to do
with eating too much Protein. I read somewhere that people on Atkins where
developing it. I thought I had it myself once.

It could also be a side effect from anesthesia. I once was an anesthesia
tech and have seen many people suffer from this either immediately or a
couple weeks after anesthesia. A few years ago my father had surgery that
last 5 hours and soon after had a massive gout attack....so bad he had to
learn to walk again. But I agree with the previous statement made about
the cherry juice.....it works!

I went to the emergency room one week after my surgery. The resident
doctor was sure that I had broken two bones in my foot...but it turned out
to be gout. My Rheumatologist says it is because I am losing weight so
fast...and she gave me some pills to help get over the flare up. I saw her
yesterday and she suspended the pills...I am doing fine now...5 weeks post
op. Of course I have slowed down to about 5 or 6 pounds a week weight
loss. That first week, I lost 16 pounds! No wonder I had gout. The pain
is terrible...Gout is nothing to be sneezed at! God bless you.
