Question:
Is this a first plateau?
Hi. I am 14 days post-op from Lap RNY and have lost 9 pounds. I've been stuck at the same weight for 4 days now. I've been counting my protein and liquids, and have been walking every day for at least 30 minutes each time. Could this be a plateau or something like the body holding water? — C P. There are a number of reasons you could be plateauing. How are you getting
your protiens? Are you watching your card intake? So many things can be
affecting your weight loss. I went throught almost the same experience,
There is too much to go into on this list, but if you are interested in
what the doctor had me change around, please email me privately.

I think it's hard to know in 14 days if you're at a plateau. You need to
give it more time. Also, there is leftover fluids in your system from the
surgery that can take 2 weeks to flush out.
Even so, 4.5 lbs. a week isn't too bad. If you keep that up, it's 14 lbs.
a month and in 10 months that's 140 lbs. Try that any other way than WLS.
BTW, that is about what my weight loss has been. I'm almost 3 months out
and I've lost around 55 lbs.
The first couple of weeks to one month is the hardest. I worried about my
weight loss too. Just keep up the good work and the weight will come off.

Hi, Carol. My advice - don't worry about it yet. I was weighing myself
daily or every two days and getting frustrated. After an initial weight
loss, it looked like a GAINED 2 lbs. or was maintaining the same weight. I
knew it would make me really depressed, so I put away the scales for about
a week. Next time I weighed, I'd lost 11 lbs. I have decided that I lose
weight in no steady way and the only way I can deal with it is to weigh
myself less and have more faith in the tool.

Plateau's can happen for up to 21 days. I had a RNY I I have had plateau
in two months in a row. Your body thinks you are starving it and it
refuses to let go of the fat. Just change your routine a little, rest one
day, eat just a little more and then get back on the program following that
and that should allow you to start loosing. I have a Freind that had Lab
Band and she has to go for fills quite often. That seems to make a
difference in her losses. Protein is important if you work out in the gym
as you can burn mussle and not fat. Walking is not going to burn mussel
unless you are below 500 calories in a day. Best of sucess to you

Carol, First I must say, I haven't had surgery yet. I am waiting for a
date at this time. But basic weight loss history tells me to say, stay off
the scale. Don't weigh yourself everyday nor many times a day. But I
agree with all the previous posters. Take a look at what you're doing. If
you are doing what you are supposed to do, then relax. Keep doing it. It
will come off. Carol

Boy does this sound familiar! I am a little more than a month out of
surgery and I've been the same weight for 3 weeks now. I have been
weighing myself and getting frustrated. I've decided to just limit my
weighing to once a week. There are many reasons - my period is late (I'm
perimenopausal so that's normal), I have a tendency to retain fluids, I'm
not active enough (despite the daily walks). I am optimistic that this is
just a plateau too - I mean how can we NOT lose with what we're
eating/drinking? Be patient. That's all the advice I can give you but I
think it's helpful knowing there are others in the same boat. Best of luck
to you!

Please remember that your body has been major trauma. It is adjusting and
needs some time. I know it is tempting but I wouldn't weigh myself
everyday. You can beome compulsive about that. Just remember to get all of
your protein since that is a major help in losing weight. Get you water to
flush out all the nasty toxins too. Good luck and it sounds like you are
doing great.

Carol, a plateau is holding the same weight for 3 months or greater, a few
days does not qualify as a plateau. You have to be patient with weight
loss, and you will get there. I highly recommend weighing once a week, it
gets frustrating otherwise. Take care. Patricia P.

Hey, I can totally relate to the plateau thing. I am 5 weeks post op. My
first 3 weeks i lost 20 pounds right off the bat. Then the next week
absolutely nothing. Now this week I noticed it going down again. Just
kind of pumped up the excerise a little now that I am more healed. But you
have to remember that you burn more calories at a greater weight than a
lesser weight. I watching Oprah and Valerie Bertinelli wears a weight vest
when she walks to trick her body into thinking that it still weighs the
same as before, so when she works out it thinks it's still working out at
the weight she was when she was heavier. I plan on getting this later,
they are kind of pricey. It will start coming off again just keep the
faith

Plateau's are so normal! Do yourself a favor, do not weigh every day, My
surgeon told me to weigh only once weekly & that is it! It helps to not
drive yourself nuts! YOu will hit more of them and it is when your body is
catching up with the shock of weight loss. Keep up the good work adn it
will roll off before you know it! Good Luck! Lori in Michigan
