I would tell you to speak from the heart and provide letters of medical necessity from your doctors. But the main reason I'm replying is to tell you to never give up! Insurance companies will always say NO in the beginning because a lot of people won't pursue it. I say never give up!

There is a book called "Gastric Bypass Surgery" by Mary P. McGowen, M.D., with Jo McGowen Chopra. You can find it may be on eBay.com and definitely on Amazon.com. IN the book there are excellent "sample" letters for letters to insurance company to get approved for surgery, and for the second letter/appeal after you were denied. All you have to do is copy the letter and change it to personally fit you. I would even be happy to make a photocopy of the appeal letter and fax it to you if you have a fax machine. Best wishes.

There are also some good appeal letters in "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies."

Is your bmi at at least 35, with any comobidities. My bmi is 37.5, but I have comobidities. My surgey was approved for the lapband on 4/29/08. You may want to look into another physician as well. I chose this route and my surgery was approved once I found another doctor. Good luck!
