Question:
Texas is mandated?
Has anyone heard of Texas was being mandated for weightloss surgery. I had a friend that went to the doctor and she was advised that this is true. I need some clarity on this? — reece1028 (posted on August 22, 2006)

Good for Texas. I believe more states are going to move to this mandate
because in the long run it is going to save the state medical dollars. The
state of Maryland have this law as well. Check with the state legislature
on insurance regulations.

Unless this changed just recently, I've never heard of it and it sure
didn't work that way for me and many that had surgery last year.
What they may have tried to convey is that in Texas the Insurance
Commission makes insurance companies give employers the option to add WLS
in their policies. This will only affect companies with more than 50
employees. A company with less than 50 isn't even given the option to add
the rider.
Again, with the option, it does not necessarily mean the employer will
elect to add the rider to the policy as the premiums are more with any and
all riders added.
Not trying to bring any negativity here, I firmly believe WLS SHOULD BE
mandated everywhere, the benefits I've received healthwise have been
amazing.
Best wishes, Dana
