After wls, you have choices to make. Pasta, rice, breads are really not a choice that is recomended. This is what most likely got you in a position to have wls. I would talk to you dietican for their advice on this issue.

Doreen..i am almost 5 yrs out and i still can't tolerate almost any kind of pasta without a rapid change in blood sugar and then soon afterwards i literally pass out!! Like sleep for hours! I can tolerate a cookie better than pasta. However, everyone is different in what they can and cant tolerate. Best wishes and as with any carbs..use major PORTION control! I can gain 5 lbs in a week by just eating too many CRACKERS!

I had surgery on 9/26/05 and have just started to be able to eat SMALL (VERY SMALL) amounts of pasta this week. I had a hard time with rice too. Good luck! Anne-Marie P

Hello Doreen, Funny you should ask, I am 10 1/2 months post op and just last night as a matter of fact I tried to eat 2 bites of my daughters spaghetti, I felt like I had a bowling ball sitting in my pouch, I don't know why, but I have not been able to eat ANY pasta or rice or meat. It is really strange to me because on some days I feel like I am able to eat alot of food and I start freaking out about stretching my pouch, and then one or 2 bites of pasta or meat and I am sick, I think it depends on the person though, my little sister had the same surgery and she is 2 years out and can eat prety much whatever she wants and maintains her weight just fine. It is strange to me. Hope this helps. Traci

Hi Doreen, I am a support group leader and I tell my group that there are allot of differant criteria for eating pasta. Some can tolerate it after 6mos to a year, and some can never tolerate it. It is not a good choice, but if you really feel deprived, try eating a small amout to see if you can tolerate it. There are some choices out there. Some health food stores carry a Soy Pasta that is a better choice. A better choice yet is to try a lean meat sauce on Spaghetti Squash. It is very tasty, and a vegetable. Try that and see if it takes care of the pasta craving. There are always choices, and you must learn to make good ones if you want this WLS to work for you. Good Luck - Judy

OK, first off I want to respond to the spaghetti squash comment!! YUCK! I tried this and found it revolting, and I even added cheese, meat sauce, onions, etc. It did not take my spaghetti cravings away, it tasted nothing like spaghetti to me, pretty much tasted NASTY! Sorry, not being mean just telling my opinion. But I was always a big pasta eater before so nothing else will do. But I do try to avoid pasta 90% of the time. I may have spaghetti once every 2 or 3 weeks. You can't deprive yourself completely!! I was maintaining a 216 pound weight loss (and had all the plastic surgeries done), until I got pregnant... Now I have gained 14 pounds back, every carb goes right to my BUTT!!

I am 5 1/2 mos. post op and tried pasta earlier this week and still feels like a golf ball stuck in my chest... I don't do rice either. I did eat a small piece of toasted garlic bread for the first time with no problem. I am kind \of glad bread and pasta are hard to eat, cause they will sure add calories fast. Hope this helps Peggy
