Question:
light headed ...?
i had my RNY on march 13th, 2006, but I am experiencing a problem. Has anybody experienced weakness after getting up from sitting or getting out of the car. When i get up , i feel light headed, and i have to stop to get this feeling overwith. While the feeling is happening everything is rushing to my head and my legs are feeling weird. i am eating like i'm suppose to, along with my water, and vitamins...so I am at a loss. This feeling started yesterday... thanks ! — kublai92 (posted on March 26, 2006)

It sounds as if you could be a little dehydrated. What is happening is
your blood pressure is dropping when you are going from sitting to
standing. This is called orthostatic
hypotension. Try to increase your fluids today and when you go from
a sitting to standing or even lying to sitting/standing, go really slow.
Once upright, stay there for a few seconds to allow your body to adjust the
blood pressure. I would call you surgeon tomorrow and let him/her know
what is happening. If things get worse or you pass out call him/her today
or go to the hospital. hang in there as your body is going through a ton
of adjustments and trying to heal. Shelly

are you on blood pressure meds? if so call your doc and get checked
immdiately, the dose may need adjusted or dropped completely. beyond that
dring your fluids. The big loss takes time for our bodies to adjust I was
like that for montrhs and off the BP pills at about a month, but do call
your PCP

Maybe blood pressure or could be low blood sugar, have your doctor check
that also.

answer number one is most likely, but you can do some self monitoring with
a gucometer, and a auto Bp machine, a good investment. and the log will
help your doctor make better decisions instead of guesses.

About a month pst op walking thru store I felt bad and decided to sit
before falling down. Happened to be a BP machine. thought might as well
check since I am sitting here. 85 over 58 and thats after I was begining to
feel better. That was the last BP pill I needed:) even without the pills my
BP was low gemnerally in the late afternoon when our biologic clocks reset
daily circidian rythym however thats spelled

When I had my surgery last June I had the same experience. It was because I
was not getting in enough water. Even now if I don't get my water in like I
should I start to get light headed when I get up. Try drinking more
liquids. I realize it is hard at first but keep trying. It will get better.
Good luck and God Bless.

I'm almost 5 years post op and this STILL happens to me.
For me it's "low blood pressure". Sometimes it drops to 80/40.
Usually it's 120/60, but at different times it DOES drop to the first
number. I've learned to ether sit down FAST, or quickly lean against the
wall and bow my head. This does'nt mean that your problem is low blood
pressure, but it could be.

Hi Diana - like most people who have responded, I'm just over 5 months
postop and I, too, experience the dizzy/light-headed thing. I was told it
was a mixture of low bp and dehydration. Make sure you keep hydrated and
rise at slower speed and you should feel better. And if you do experience
the dizzy spell, just stop moving and bow your head - that seems to do the
trick. Good luck!

As others have said...if it keeps happening talk to your Dr. I am 2 and a
half years post op..and I was having problems with passing out and feeling
light headed. I had to have a tilt table test done and it was positive for
a long neurological name that I cannot remember...the general concensus was
that I am dehydrated, even with getting 60-80 ounces of water a day. The
Dr. said my body was not holding onto the water, was just letting it pass
out of my system, so i had to increase my salt intake in order for my body
to hold onto the water. There could be many reasons for dizziness, as all
of the responses have shown. So please make sure to let your Dr. know what
is happening.
