Not usually because most people having this surgery are type 1 or type 2
diabetics anyways, and after surgery the type 2 diabeties leaves like it
did for me. So, no I don't see them postponing it.

I am diabetic and part of the reason I had the surgery was to help with
that. I am now off medication for the diabets, and I used to take insulin!

I had type 2 diabetes (I took several pills each day). After surgery, the
nursing staff was always in to check my sugar level. If it was twwo high,
they would give me a shot of insulin. Now 3 mos later, I am completely off
my diabetes medicine.

What your PCP and surgeon are going to be looking for when you are pre op
with your sugars is if you have uncontrolled sugar levels while being on
meds. Meaning that they may have you log your sugars for a few weeks and
they will review your logs. They will also probably doing some blood work
on you to see what your A1C is over a period of time while you are on meds.
If your levels are not controlled with meds during that time you may have
your surgery portponed. A person cannot be bouncing all over the place with
their sugars and go into surgery, it is dangerous. It is dangerous enough
with an obese person to have anesthesia as is let alone have wacky sugar
levels to boot.

I'm a Type 1 diabetic, my AIC was good and I got clearance from the
endocronologist prior to WLS so I agree with Christine 100%, you should
have your blood sugar controlled before surgery....an AIC over 7 or 8% may
lead to a postponement, but it will help you during WLS. Good luck!
