Question:
I'm 1 week post op from RNY and I can't stop thinking about food
I'm not really hungry with the liquids but knowing that I can't have real food is driving me crazy. Does it get better? I hope. — Linda819 (posted on August 30, 2010)

It does get better. At first I was having lots of food dreams and wanted
to kill anyone around me eating anything I liked. Once you get passed the
pureed/soft food stage, it gets a lot better.

Hi Linda, Think about thin. Think about buying new and exciting clothes.
Think about people telling you, "Linda, you look GREAT!!". Think
about going up stairs without huffing and puffing. Think about getting on
the floor with a small child and playing with them. Think about living a
long and happy and healthy life. Think about all the reasons you took this
step. Peace,Ray

Linda, that happened to all of us. Any time you are letting go of an
addiction you can become obsessed with it. I remember in my week after
surgery (over 3 years ago) I obsessed over wanting a hot pastrami sandwich
and I had never had a hot pastrami sandwich in my life! Aren't we silly?
Good luck to you.

Linda,
"divorcing" food was one of my most difficult challenges. It
does get better... I remember being very depressed and angry, wondering if
I did the right thing. YES I did and so didn't you... I am 8 mos out and
80 lbs lighter and it is well worth the road I had to travel to get here...
hang in there it does get better and know you're not alone in your feelings
:)

it does get better with time.Sept 9 it will be three months for me and i
have lost around 85 pounds so far.it seem like when i have my surgery(had
the bypass) everything on tv was about food and it was hard watching the
ones around you eat so i do know what you mean.i ask my family a few days
after i had it done.i never would have guessed there was so many things on
tv about food and it seem like every show had food on it.but i know if i
did this so far anyone can do it.good luck to you.

Hi Linda, welcome to the losers' bench! I am 2 wks post op and I have had
lots of food dreams! Crazy food dreams! I believe it is normal... they
seem to be decreasing. I'm on pureed diet right now. :)

I haven't had surgery yet, my date is 10/4, but I have been
"detoxing" for the last 4 weeks-no sugar, no caffeine, no bread,
minimal carbs ( under nutritionist care). And I haven't even started my
liquids yet ( my surg has his patients do 2 weeks before and 4 weeks
after). So I am preparing mentally too.
I guess it is a little like alcohol-everywhere in your face, I have not
been an alcoholic, but people say it is easier to give up alcohol because
you don't need to keep eating it to live. Be strong, good luck and keep
your eye on the prize-that is my mantra right now. :0)

I'm 11 months post op and I still get food fantasies in occasion. And it's
all stuff that I wouldn't touch otherwise. As someone said, once you're on
regular food, it does get better. Maybe we should write a book about it.
We would get a nice chuckle out of it.

Thanks for all your input. It has gotten much better. I also had my first
dumping and I don't want to go through that again.

I am at post op day 6. When I see an ad on tv, I turn the channel. I
watched QVC's fashion show. For me, I want to be thin more that eat
something. It is called head hunger. It will pass.

I didn't realize it until I was post op too. Apparently it's the norm;
except I embraced the head hunger and filled up on Diners, Drive in's and
Dives on the Food Network. OMG, watching Guy Fieri bite into a sandwich
and describe every morsel when I could barely hold a sip of water - It was
like food porn! After awhile, I started to notice and say things like,
"Gosh, we eat a lot in this country" when I saw a commercial for
a Carl's Jr burger or "that is waaaay too much food" when looking
at a Subway footlong. Then I become a gourmet genius: Playing around with
various herbs/spices, learned how to make the most flavor come from the
smallest bite. LOL! It doesn't seem possible right now because it's all
new but you'll be fine and giggling about it too in due time.
