Question:
Aspirin
Has anyone Post RNY, had to take a regimen of aspirin, after vascular surgery, or taken Plavix, to prevent vascular surgery, if so how did that go for you? I know we're not supposed to take aspirin, so what does one do in a situation like this?? Thank you for your answers! :) — lesleigh07 (posted on January 12, 2010)

I have rheumatoid arthritis and before my WLS i was told that I would never
be able to take NSAIDS again, and I haven't..I wouldn't even try to take
it..It will eat a hole in your new stomach so its not even worth it. I had
to make that decision before my surgery if it was worth not taking ever
again. So I take tylenol, etc even though it is not as good as NSAIDS. My
advice, stay away from it.

I was taken off asprin and Plavix prior to surgery. Now a year and half
later they are restarting the asprin. I seem to have been fine while not on
either but since I had a double bypass the asprin is needed to protect the
vien. They did not restart the plavix due to problems it can cause with
bleeding.

I take a regimen of low-dose aspirin, taken with plenty of water it is
fine. I tried to take some Ibuprofen once, lets just say I won't be taking
that ever again! It hurt like hell!

If it comes down to possible ulcer versus likely heart attack, go with the
aspirin. There are preventatives you can do to help mitigate the damage
(such as a daily PPI and/or carafate if your doctor feels it's necessary).
There are times in which rules need to be bent. This is one of them.
