Question:
food question

I'm a little confused as how to eat when I come home from surgery. For protein do I drink shakes? If so how many a day? Do I drink them first? Is it just liquid the first week? Anyone with a menu or a list of what and how I should eat would be appreciated. I know the dietician will probably tell me but I want to get all the food I need ahead of time.    — cuppaloopy (posted on November 27, 2009)

When I first came home I was on liguids, i.e., clear broth, sugar free popsicles, lots of water, then in a couple of days after, I began protein shakes. I am not allowed to drink jucie, too much sugar. Your Dr should have given you a diet to follow. My marvelous Dr. gave a booklet with lots of information in it. With my Dr. he has stages for the foods you should be eating.

I was on liquids (clear jello and broth and sugr free popcycles, tea) for the first couple of weeks and then upgraded to puree and then soft and then regular food after every couple of weeks. I don't remember, if ever, shakes were introduced again as I was to get my protein from my food if possible. It went fast. Good luck!

Each nutritionists/dieticians post-op diet varies. Some people are required to be on clear liquids right after surgery, others are allowed full liquids. I wouldn't recommend buying too much at this point, you should wait until you get the recommended dietary requirements. Good luck!

I was on clear liquids for two weeks. Some of the Unjury flavors count as clear liquid as long as they are made with water. Like the others, sugarfree popcicles, jello (I could only eat two small spoonfulls of that though), and water. The next two weeks I was able to add milk products like pudding as long as it was totally smooth. Your taste buds change after surgery, so it might be a good idea to just try to get samples to use when you get home then you can see what you like post op. Just take it easy. The healing process takes time and don't rush your recovery. Good luck!

when I first came home it was pretty much anything liuid. but coffee...I could have milk, water , fruit juice that was diluted 50/50, broth, boullion, popcicles..s/f, cocoa...sugar free of course. I drank v-8 but I don't remember when I started it. First week or not. The protein was in shake form and I used unjury unflavored cuz all others gagged me after time. Good luck to you! hugs, kim

My diet for the first 9 days following surgery was clear liquids until about three days, at which time I was to add a protein shake.

If you want to email me, I will scan and send you my diets and the different stages for pre- and post-op. They are written to where they are easy to read, and nice to be able to flip to them anytime. My daughter is 12 and she loves looking at them and I feel this is helping her to prepare as well :) My email is [email protected] please let me know if you need anything at all!!!

You really need to get this information from your surgeon and his/her dietician. Each surgeon is different. Some people are on clear liquids for 1 week, some for 4 weeks. Some people start on soft foods on day 7, some not for 30 days. Your surgeon should have explicit written instructions for you to follow. Are you having your surgery at a Bariatric Center of Excellence? If so, they will have your surgeon's orders as well. Doesn't your surgeon have required pre-op classes that you have to take dealing with diet and nutrition? Or support groups that you can attend prior to surgery? Please check this out, as all of this information should be available to you from your Bariatric professional, and to follow our advice may be widely divergent from what your surgeon requires. Good luck on your surgery!

I just came home on Thursday....Thanksgiving Day. I am on liquids (Phase II), It sounds like most of us here do liquids for a few weeks (6-8 weeks) before we are introduced to solid foods again. I would definately contact your doctor/ surgeon to have him discuss your return home food schedule, etc.

Didn't your surgeon's office provide you with a diet to be followed? This should have been in stages where they tell you what foods are allowed and when. You should be asking this question of his office and not folks in a support group. If this hasn't been provided yet, just ask them for it.
