Question:
How Many Calories should I be eating?

How many Calories should I be eating I'm 7mths. out and I'm working out 4 times a week about 2hrs each time. I've lost 65lbs but seems to have slowed.    — mistee.rios (posted on July 2, 2009)

My doc says 800-1000. I am 8 mos and wasn't losing any so I had to lower mine to 700 and I began losing. You are doing a lot of exercise so the 800-1000 would probably work for you but ask your doc or nut to be sure.

Wow, when I was about 2 and a half months out, I asked this question of my registered dietician, the one who works with my surgeon. Let me quote her..." Erica, Your weight loss is great. It sounds like you had a couple bumps in the road but you are well on your way to success. Keep up the activity and in regards to the food, DON'T focus on your calories....that is your old dieting brain. Most bypass patients eat on average 600-1100 calories per day in the first year but if your only focusing on calories then you're not looking at the fuel your putting in your body. We would like you to instead focus on protein, fat and carbs Ensure your getting >65 grams of protein per day, less than 120 grams of carbs and less than 48 grams fat per day. The website fitday.com may be helpful in letting you know what your currently fueling your body with from a macronutrient standpoint. NO more protein drinks if you're meeting your protein by food....and you should be by now." So, it looks to me like they don't WANT you to count calories. I'm still not comfortable with this answer, because she and the PA in my surgeon's office have significantly different numbers for fat allowance. The dietician says 48 grams of fat, but the PA says 25. I'm going to have to forward the dietician's email to the PA, and ask which is right. By they way, my surgeon told me I should be working out at LEAST 5-6 days per week, and walking at least an hour for 7 days a week. Of course, because of my back and knees, walking is not an option for me, so I substitute riding the stationary bike in front of the TV at night! :-)
