Question:
protein powder recommendations
I am looking for protein powder recommendations. It seems that the supplements are in gigantic containers and aren't cheap. Not something I want to experiment with. What protein supplements do you use and how is it best used? — 120wannabe (posted on April 16, 2009)

The least nasty one I found was the Syntac Nectar Strawberry (one scoop has
90 calories and 23 grams of protein). I could drink it as a shake okay
while I was on liquid. Now on food, there are days I'm going to come up
short on protein that I mix one scoop with a container of Kroger CARBmaster
strawberry yogurt. It takes a while to mix the powder in but it does so
pretty smooth. The result has 170 calories and 35gms of protein which is
about the maximum we can try to absorb at one time. The rest I tried were
pretty nasty and it was more like taking medicine than enjoying them as
food. Hope this helps. Kevin

You may want to check out www.bariatriceating.com they have a sample basket
so you can try different products. Also your nutritionist may have
different products for you to taste. Remember one thing your taste changes
post op so the protein I liked before surgery is not what I wanted after
surgery so don't invest in alot pre op. Some other products out there that
I use are the IDS shots. They are 3 oz shots that I add to water and have
42gms of protein. It is not a big investment to try. There is also Isopure
in bottles.Post op in the beginning I used unflavored Anywhey and added to
everything to give me added protein. It comes in smaller containers. Good
luck with your search.

Hi Susan,
I have found that many companies have sample you can try. I myself go to
GNC and my store allows you to sample their products. I like the ESSENTIAL
NATURAL..strawberry, Amplify..chocolate mint which are lg container..but
you may be able to sample them. Also from there I like the ISOPURE protein
bottle dinks..cold lots of crushed
ice and just bought ProSLAM..it is like three shots size drink. I was
looking for some proteins I could keep around for the stormy season here in
Florida. So I keep the pre-mixed on hand for being on the run and rainny
times when we many not have power here. Hope this helps you in some way.

This may not answer your guestion, but I found that the liquid protein RTDs
(ready to drink) were much better for me than the powders. That would be
like your IsoPure 20 oz bottles with 40 grams of protein, and your New Whey
Protein Bullets with 42 grams of protein (which can be added to Crystal
Light, or warm or iced fruit-flavored herbal teas, or diluted with water).
It's like drinking adult koolaid. Then, there is the Oh Yeah protein RTD
protein shake, especially the vanilla, with 30 grams of protein and is
delicious mixed with any of the various Da Vinci sugar-free flavorings
available from the bariatriceating.com website. Oh, I have lots of
powders.... and I like them all, surprisingly... Like Syntrax Nectar Fuzzy
Navel, or Syntrax Nectar Sweets Chocolate Truffle (both with 23 grams of
protein), or BSN Lean Dessert which comes in Banana Nut Cake, Chocolate
Coconut Candy Bar, and Fresh Cinnamon Bun flavors among others (but the
Lean Dessert only calls for 5 ounces of water and you need to shake it and
let it sit for a few minutes... it thickens slightly and tastes just like a
melted milk shake going down, like velvet....smooth and yummy - with 20
grams of protein). There is also the Any Whey unflavored, unscented
protein powder that you can mix with just about anything (soups, puddings,
broths, pancakes, etc. - which has 17 grams of protein). If I had to
recommend the best protein powder that I like, I'd say it would be one of
the Syntrax Nectars or Sweets...but if I had to say the best protein powder
that I can stomach, it would have to be the EAS chocolate in a large
resealable bag, available from Costco, with 27 grams of protein. It's not
too bad. A little bit of the powdery taste, but very drinkable.

Chocolate Unjury is ok. It is expensive though. They have samples for $1.75
each. On-line you can find cheaper samples of stuff instead of spending $
on stuff you cant stand. None of it is delicious its just nutritious. I
also use these 3 oz bottles @ walmart for $2.00 25g protein. You might have
to ask them. My store keeps them in the back.
Take Care, Pam
