Question:
I have Hypothyroidism, my surgery is scheduled for 4/8.

I was told today by the surgeon most likely I will not get to have surgery. Has this ever happened to anyone here? I have done everything they told me to do and too get this close and may not get to have the surgery really bothers me. Please answer!    — soontobeme (posted on April 3, 2009)

Sorry to hear that. It doesn't make sence to me. I have hypothyroidism also and i had surgery in 2007. They new i had it, but never gave me any static about not being able to have the surgery, I had laproscopic RNY. I would do some checking on this if i were you.

I had hypothyroidism and I had RNY on 12/29/09. Since surgery my thyroid levels are normal and I've been able to come off of my thyroid medication. I would talk to him again or get a second opinion.

When were you diagnosed? If it was during your pre-op testing, i.e. you were just diagnosed, then it makes sense that he would say you could not have surgery. If your hypothyroidism is not controlled, then they would be hesitant to do surgery because it would affect how your body processes food, your hormones, and possibly your overall recovery. Also, it sometimes once they "fix" the hypothyroidism, it allows you to lose weight easier, which may change your surgery options. Hypothyroidism does not keep you from having surgery if it is under control. (I have hypothyroidism that is controlled with medication.) I would ask your doctor for a clarification, because he may have meant "You can't have surgery until we get your hypothyroidism under control" and hopefully not "You can never never have surgery because you have hypothyroidism." Good luck.
