depends on the surgeon, most of us don't have them. Ask your surgeon.

I don't know of any prior conversations and it sounds like you have had
some, so I'll just jump in. Sometimes people do have NG tubes down their
nose and into the stomach for drainage during the surgery and occasionally
for some time afterwards. If you do have one, they put it in once you are
under anesthesia and it is really a wonderful thing, especially if you are
having nausea or vomiting. Getting it removed is no big deal. Really
nothing to be afraid of. More often, there is a g-tube through the abdomen
and into the stomach for up to 6 weeks or so after RNY's. Depends on the
surgeon. Somes surgeons use them on all patients, some never use them. I
would definitely take a list of questions to your surgeon asap and get them
answered so there will be no surprises. Go to support group meetings and
ask a lot of questions of patients that have used the same surgeon as you,
do a lot of research. Get as educated as you can.
Best of luck,

I suppose it depends on surgeon and procedure. Sorry if I missed earlier
postings but not sure what procedure you're having. I just had my RNY and
Dr. Graber does not leave NG tube in place. An NG is placed along with
camera line and of course endotracheal tube (for breathing) during the
procedure (there's a throat full of stuff!) but nothing after. I was back
in my room walking and sipping water in the first hour after recovery room.
When I chose surgeon and procedure he and his team were extremely thorough
in explaining all these things - and I wish you the same!

I am a nurse. I had RNY in Jul 08. No NG tube. I know of nobody who has had
an NG tube postop.

I did NOT have a ng tube either but I did have a drain tube coming out of
my stomach for a week. It wasn't as bad as I thought at all. It is used
to drain fluids that do not belong in your stomach area.

Depends on your surgeon. I did not have one.

I didn't have one when i woke up.
I think it just depends on the circumstances and the surgeon.

Had Lap RNY in dec.08 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The NG tube was removed immed
after surgery, no drains either. Was having ice chips 2 hours after
surgery. My dr. was Dr. Bayron at Florida Medical Center. They explained
everything and had a Q&A session afterwards. Ask all the questions
until you are comfortable with the answers. Good Luck. carolcooper

WHEN I WOKE UP MINE WAS STILL IN AND THE NURSE DIDN'T REMOVE IT UNTIL ABOUT
5AM THE NEXT MORNING. I WAS STILL ABLE TO HAVE THE ICE CHIPS AFTER SUREGERY
BUT I HAD SO MUCH NAUSEA THAT I COULDN'T KEEP IT DOWN. BUT LIKE MOST OF THE
PREVIOUS ANSWERS IT REALLY DEPENDS ON YOUR SURGEON.

Very few surgeons keep an NG tube in after surgery. They use it during
surgery to help determine if there are leaks, then when the
anesthesiologist takes out your breathing tube, he usually removes the NG
tube as well. I know that I had one because my anesthesiologist told me I
would have one, but that it would be removed at the end of the surgery.
Good luck and don't be nervous about all these little rumors that you hear,
most docs don't tell you about it because you will never even know it
happened. This is the best thing I ever did for myself, congratulations
you will do great!

I had open RNY in Dec '08 and had an NG tube for several days after
surgery. It all depends on the type of surgery and your doc. I was scared
to death of this tube, but at worst it was only very uncomfortable and I
was so happy when it was finally out. Good luck!!
