I am afraid all surgeons will require it. This surgery all depends on your
digestive system to work. They have to know you do not have anything going
on in your colon or in your digestive track. I went through testing for
months, to be approved for this surgery. Luckily I am over 50 and had
already had a colonoscopy, so all they required was a copy of the one I had
a few years ago. - Teresa

I had mine the day of my surgery. It was performed just before the
surgery, and I was pretty much OUT of it. I had my surgery done in Mexico,
so they do things a bit different there. I had a colonoscopy done in the
STATES that was abject MISERY! The one in Mexico, was NO PROBLEM at ALL!
I went straight into surgery from there. I hope this helps answer some
questions for you. Hugh

I don't know anyone who had to have a colonoscopy before their surgery but
we are all in Oklahoma. We had lots of other pre-op tests but not this
one.

I didn't have to have a colonoscopy, nor did anyone else I know who had the
surgery. All surgeon's requirements are different, though.

My surgery was in the retro ages so I've been told LOL ...5 years ago and I
didn't have one either...But as always...different surgeons have different
protocol even today...Don't worry about the tests...They are for your own
good and wellfare...My doc went in thru the throat which was not very
friendly either! Endoscopy..Didn't particularly like that at all! And the
arterial blood gas test was a bit on the unfriendly side as well!
But...it's all forgotten and in the past and 5 years later I am thinner and
healthier and happier and I don't care what end it they'd have to test out
to have taken me this far....LOL So relax! Let them run your tests!

Uh yea...I've NEVER had a colonoscopy. This is the firs I'm hearing of ANY
doctor requiring it. I haven't even seen any discussion of such a thing on
the boards.

I didn't have a colonoscopy either. I did have an endoscopy to make sure I
did not have any ulcers or h-pylori. As it turns out. He did take a small
tissue sample and I tested positive for hpylori. I was put on a 2 week
course of major antibiotics. As for the procedure itself. I was out of it
and didn't feel a thing. I had not idea what was being done. It only took
about 20 minutes.

Shari,
Most surgeons require colonoscopy for this surgery. They need to know your
digestive system works and that you have nothing else wrong like polyps or
tumors or indicators of any types of bowel disease.

I had LapBand 11-04-08, and have met with at least 60 other people here in
Jacksonville that have had WLS and not a one had to have a colonoscopy. In
fact, we had no abd x-ray done, no upper GI studies done, and only had to
go for a visit once a month for insurance to pay. Go
Aetna!!
We have several people who have come to work at the hospital I work at just
for the insurance. All of us, me included, only missed one week of work.

I have not had my surgery yet, but my surgeon says that he only does a
colonoscopy depending if insurances require it or if medical hx or problems
indicate one is needed. He does want an upper endoscopy though.

I personally have never heard anyone mention getting a colonoscopy before
surgery. I sure did not have one, nor did any one that I have talked to.

Since I am 45 I did not have to have a colonoscopy, but my doctor only
requires it if you are over the age of 50. I'm in the state of Virginia.
