Question:
Help PLEASE!!!!!
I had open rny last monday (1/05). I am now able to start my soft food stages on week 2. I need some ideas. I have sf puddings, and yougurts. Can I have eggs? I have also got some instant potatoe mix, as well as some beans. I really need some ideas guys. Also, I can start my protein drinks in now to get protein until I can eat more. So, i also need some ideas on that also. Obviously, it has to be sugar free. SO, please help, and fast. You guys ROCK!!!! — jackie L. (posted on January 11, 2009)

Hi Jackie! On week 2, I stuck with soft foods but didn't try eggs until
about 6 weeks out. I stuck with cream of wheat for a while, but really as
long as you are chewing well, soft boiled eggs should be okay. Did you get
a book from your surgeon explaining what you can eat through your 16th
week?

Everyones stages are different...But I was eating eggs and soft
foods...like cottage cheese, yogurt, and anything pureed (NO CHUNKS
WHATSOEVER) Including oatmeal which I pureed before I made it to make
certain it was "baby food consistancy"...I ate chicken and other
meats this way too (with broth until is was very moist and no chunks)...The
only food I ate dry was saltines (with peanutbutter and NSA seedless
preserves (mixed that into unflavored yogurt too) as I was not allowed to
have any fiberous food like wheat or or seeds or pulp from raw fruit and
veggies for 3 months(applesauce and mashed bananas were okay
too)...Again...I will stress that different surgeons have different
opinions and worse yet...different patients have skewwed and misunderstood
ideas too or ideas and food fears of their own...So you end up with a
melting pot of different suggestions...It's best check with your
surgeon/nut. You might go over to the RNY forum and READ what others are
eating and doing and for support, ideas, luv, humor, struggles and all
sorts of things! (Including finding out that strict forever food no-no's
are myths to most and that actaully eating REAL food will not harm you!)
Sorry I think I am PMSing!

I also had "open rny" on Nov. 4th...I was allowed (No Sugar
Added) Carnation Instant Breakfast, SF popsicles, 8 ozs. crystal light,
diluted juice (4 oz. juice / 4 oz. water), strained cream soup(s), Yogurt,
NS cocoa made with skim milk, Atkins drink (only one a day), Advant Edge,
Unjury protein powder (skim or 1% milk), High proten drinks, tomato soup
(made with skim or 1% milk), homemade custard (made with sugar
sub...Splenda, etc.), Dannon Light-n-Fit smoothies, high protein or low
carb Slim Fast...But the eggs didn't come 'til after my 2-week
check-up...Good Luck to you and hope this helps a bit...

For protein drinks - IsoPure Grape Frost is delicious, clear, the
consistancy of water, and 40 gms of protein. Also, Biochem's wild berry is
delicious, as is Nectar's Chocolate Truffle.

I am 4 months out RNY and scrambled eggs was my first real food in my soft
food stage. I had yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese. I was drinking my protein
drinks my first day back home.

i had 3 weeks full liquids, 3 weeks purees and then 3 weeks soft foods post
op. i stuck with them like a bible, only thing i needed permission for was
adding nhotb sauce to everything- thank heavens it was authorized. i liked
1 oz ricotta cheese-fat free, with 1 oz prepared spag sauce, less than 3
grams sugar a serving, and 1 tablespoon shredded ff cheese, nuked- like
eating lasagne- on the puree stage. good luck cindi M.D. -230#

About eggs, my doctor suggested eggs. And a really good choice was egg drop
soup. It is so warm going down and plus it had eggs which is protein.
Yogert, cottage cheese, sf jello, any thing you can cook (like veggies) and
mash with a fork works really well. Just chew until it is like liquid and
you wont have any problems. Best of Luck!

Everyone is different and every surgeon has their own protocol. My Doc had
me on liguids for at least 10 days and was picky about which soft foods I
ate the next phase.
What ever you do in the beginning avoid foods with lost of fiber, things
that give you gas, fibrous veggies like asparagus, sweet potatoes and
pineapple. Puree everything you eat at first so it is pourable or thin
enough to get through a straw. Broths can be used as thinning agents.
Cream soups are a good option and cream of wheat. Any fats or spices, even
cinnamon may bother you for a while. Alot of things will taste stronger
than normal - you may even need to dilute Crystal light because it tastes
too sweet.
Only try ONE new food each day so if you have problems, you will know what
foods you tolerate and which ones to avoid.
Best of luck to you....it will get better every week!

Focus on foods that are high in protein. The list allows SF pudding and
such, but it really doesn't have much protein. Set the habits from the
very beginning. Good Luck.

Malt-o-meal. Someone on here recommended I try large curd cottage cheese
with some spaghetti sauce and microwave it. It was great! Blended soups
and chili. Progresso was the best! Hope that helps.
