Question:
I am on my 6th day of being on a liquid diet...
and I am having a hard time drinking, and being very hungry for some food with substance. I am anemic and have already passed out once and have been very weak. I am just wondering how did you cope through this time and would it hurt if I ate some soft foods just to have more energy? — Sweetsa (posted on July 20, 2008)

Hi,
Hopefully you are drinking your protein shakes? You can also try sugar
free popsicles and sf jello...adds some substance and are considered
liquids.

Yes, it would hurt you VERY MUCH to advance your diet too fast. You don't
get extra energy from solids. You can get that from protein shakes. I
know it's hard, the urge to have something, ANYTHING to chew. But this is
temporary. You will be eating soon, and you don't want to do anything to
hurt your stomach. Call your doctor. They should know what's going on.

Hi Lee,
I'm almost all most 3 weeks post-op from WLS surgery. I have had to work on
drinking the shakes. I have also been trying a drink called ISOPURE it has
40g. protien. My daughter bought it at GNC it comes in a bottle that looks
like a Sobee drink. It reminds me of Kool-aid, which I dont like. I just
make everything ICE cold and I'm good to go. Also, I have WHEY Protien that
I have added to SOY milk and even to some cold coffee with crushed ice.
[Like you can buy the frozen slushie drinks] BUT others have sd they can't
drink cold things. I can not drink anything warm yet. I would NOT do
anything your DR has sd not to do yet. Do you have a nutritionist ? Call
them and ask what other things you may have if you don't have a list. Just
go slow, small sips or spoons of the slushies drinks you can make at home.
Wish you well, Julie

You can get a little energy from a good liquid vitamin/mineral supplement
like VEMMA. Go to TrySomeVemma.com But your best bet is protein drink.

Call your doctor- NOW!!!
Are you doing pre-op clear liquids or post op liquid diet? If you are
doing pre-op, it is common to feel weak, but passing out is never normal.
If you are post op, you should be doing protein shakes with vitamins in
liquid form and should begin to feel better shortly. If you know you are
anemic, are you getting enough iron or do you need a blood transfusion?
Most often if you are actually passing out, if is from hypotension--- low
blood pressure or from hypoglycemia--- low blood sugar. If you were taking
meds for these co-morbids before WLS, you most likely will need to come off
of them soon. Check your blood pressure and blood sugar and see your
doctor asap. Have your iron levels checked and possibly your meds
adjusted.
Helpful hint- when you start to feel faint- lay down and elevate your legs
to raise your pressure.
Good luck to you,

Dawn is always right. Get to your Doctor now. Passing out is never, never
good ,it is a major sign from your body and brain that their is a problem.

First of all, if you are passing out, you need to call your doctor.
Second of all, calories are calories whether they come from liquids or
solids. I don't know what your liquid diet requirements are, but perhaps
adding cream soups would be helpful.

I agree you should call your dr, but I'd also say that you are probably not
getting in your protein. Protein is your life line right now. Hold on to
it and drink it...whether you want it or not. I assume that the liquid
diet you're on is post op and not the liquid diet some people go on pre-op?
Post op, if you're hungry after six days, I'd hazard a guess that it's
more 'mental' hunger than real hunger. If you're feeling hungry, have a
protein shake. You really do need to give your stomache this time to heal
before moving to the next step. You've made a life changing decision and
need to let your body adjust to living with that decision.
Good luck and don't give up on yourself. You can do it and it will get
easier.
