Question:
I am unable to take my vitamins and protien shakes...any suggestions?
I have been since having my surgery unable to drink my protien shakes and take vitamins. I know this is detremental in my success but no matter how hard I try I cannot keep them down. I have tried different brands, etc....I am only able to eat homestyle chicken noodle soup, cream of wheat and no sugar jello but let me tell you it is getting very hard to keep eating this diet. My surgery was on Dec 4th and since then that has all I have eaten. My sense of smell and taste have completely been altered and frankly at times I feel like it would just be better off to curl up in a ball and die. I don't want to feel this way nor do I want to waste this opportunity to be healthy but it is so hard to eat without throwing up or the nausa that goes along with each day. I recently changed jobs and have lost my insurance so going to the doctors is out of the question. Has anyone else gone through this and what will help? I am run down, no energy and unable to excercise because of not wanting to get out of bed. Please help someone....at this point I feel like this was the biggest mistake of my life! HELP! I started out before surgery at 434 lbs and now am at 292....my weight on surgery day was 377 so I am proud of the fact I have lost so much but not sure how much longer my body will co-operate. Thanks in advance for any help *hugs* — MommySalami0529 (posted on March 24, 2008)

Hey there!!
I went through the same exact thing, almost exactly. Eventually I just
gave in and went the Unjury route. It was the best of the worst solutions
that I tried. I am now just over 3 years out and believe me, I too remember
the recovery from WLS. Some of the issues I had were awful bowel issues,
massive hair loss, and nausea.
I wish I had more to share but I am always here if you need to chitchat

I had surgery in May 2006. My wife had a RNY revision from an old bypass
surgery of 1980. She found it difficult to eat also. She takes maalox
chewables, and says that helps her. You need to get protein in somehow.
There are shakes, protein bullets or other premade protein drinks, and then
there is also Prostat 64. It's like cough syrup, but a concentrated source
of protein. It comes in a few flavors, but I understand the wild cherry is
the best. You can hold your nose and "down a shot" or you could
mix in with a bottle of water. I don't know what your problem is with
vitamins. Is the the aftertaste, or you have trouble swallowing? I didn't
like pills, so I opted for a liquid vitamin, as described on my profile
page. One ounce and you have all your vitamins for the day. I've also opted
for powdered calcium to mix with my foods to minimize any pills other than
my prescriptions. Dried peas are a snack food from health food stores, 1/4
cup = 6 grams of protein. You might be able to handle these as they don't
taste awful, just like a crunchy veggie flavor. You're more than welcome
to PM me if you need further help. I attend several support groups per
month. Have you consulted with your surgeon or nutrionist about options for
protein too??BTW, you have a pretty smile. Let's keep working on this to
get you healthy.

You've got to get some nutrition or things will not get better.
I could not drink the protein drinks either and I finally found
"Cher-amino"...It's a liquid...tastes like really ripe
cherries...and is kind of thick, but you can mix into a Crystal Lite drink.
You only need two tablespoons. Have you tried a chewable vitamin? Or a
liquid. I cannot swallow pills even 4 years out. I have to chew them. Try
coating your stomach with something dairy if you can...like cottage cheese?
yogurt?
How about some vitamin drink powders by crystal lite and others? You've
come a long way and look lovely! But you want to get healthy too! So try
some new ideas...If you have a Vitamin Shoppe ...They are usually really
helpful if you ask them what other WLS patients are having luck with.
You can do this...your grandson is a beautiful child! Try not to feel so
helpless and down and just keep trying things...It eventually does get
easier...and you will be able to tolerate MUCH more! Good luck...

To it sounds like dehydration.. :( Try drinking warm tea or someghing
warm... sounds like you can keep warm things down.. our tummys kind of need
"woken up" after we have slept and my nutritionists suggested to
me to do the warm thing half an hour before I eat..
You can also add some dry milk to your cream of weat.. that will add more
protein and you can also try cream of mushroom, cream of cellary (sp?) but
also add the dry milk to that to when you warm it up..
With your protein drinks try to add some sf pudding... I use bananna shakes
with vanilla powder sf pudding.. and with my chocolate shakes I add
peanutbutter with it and a little bit of splenda.. tastes just like reese
cup :) yummy...
I hope this helps and you have done a great job on the weight loss so far,
but I sure understaned about being worn out and wanting to stay in bed...
God bless you

To get your protein in try the Isopure Drinks at GNC. They taste good and
have 150 cal and 40 grams of protein. I didn't like the shakes. This is a
clear liquid and when you put it on ice it is very refreshing plus the
bonus of all that protein. I get enough eating usually so I dilute it half
with water and it lasts two days. Good luck and hang in.

You might want to try protein capsules. I use them and they work for me.
They're called Capsul-Pro and you can buy them at www.nashuanutrition.com
Good luck!

About the "Protein Capsules" that Jon is recommending.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
We believe the product is grossly mislabeled -- that it exaggerates the
amount of protein you are getting by 4 times.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
They claim 11 grams of protein (and they do link that amount to the % Daily
Value so they cannot say they mean something different).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
But if there were 11 grams of protein in THREE capsules as they claim, the
bottle would weigh more than FOUR TIMES as much as it does.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just thought you would want to know.

You have to have the protein and the vitamins. I use Nectar, Fuzzy Navel
flavor mixed with one packet Crystal Light lemonade packet and 10 to 20 oz
of water. Tastes like orange juice and is the same consistancy. I chew
two Flintstone with Iron and two calcium chews. You have to do it. You
have no choice. Pat

I know you said you lost your insurance but you need to get to the doctor
ASAP. I had some of the same issues you state you have and it turned out
that my gallbladder needed to be removed. My surgery date as the same as
yours. You need your vitamins and the protien.
