were you done lap or open? Have you had your mechanics checked to see if
you have any kind of mechanical failure, like a staple line disruption or
fistula? You might speak to others who are regaining or finding their
older surgeries have failed here:

Four years post-op and now you find you are able to eat a lot more. What
point are you missing? WHY are you eating a lot more. Obviously the more
you eat the more calories you get and therefore you gain. Part of your
four year effort should have been in learning to measure your quantities.
Take responsibility and don't rely on your pouch to restrict you. Has it
stretched? Doesn't matter, you are the one that makes the choices as to
what, when, and how much you eat.

I hope you find the answers and guidance that you are looking for by
posting this question. Obviously that man that answered before me is an
expert in all areas, otherwise he would have NO RIGHT to be so judgemental
and rude. I will apologize for him, although I do not know him. I thought
this website was for us all to help eachother. ANYWAY...;)
The only thing I can tell as as a response to your question is that I am 1
1/2 yr post op, my surgeon told me that the pouch stretches over time, so
we will be able to eat more, but from what I understand...grazing is the
big "no-no" I caught myself falling into that a few months ago.
I would suggest just going back to the basics and see how that works for
you. That is what I have to do every so often. Sometimes I catch my self
"De-Railing" from the track, but I get back on it and the pounds
start coming off again. Good luck!

Teresa, sorry you got such a negative reply from Harry. Unfortunately
there are some people that can't be supportive and helpful. I strongly
recommend the site Michelle gave you, it has lots of valuable information
that I am thankful to have at my fingertips. I have also found myself able
to eat more and yep the emotional eating is here. Today is a new day and a
new beginning for me, I'm going back to the basics of WLS, things required
of us as a newbie to regain control. If it's more of an emotional eating
you are experiencing, refocus and start over. There is also a possibility
that your mechanics aren't working properly (i.e. stretched pouch, enlarged
stoma, stable line disruption, fistula), to determine if that's the case
you will need to schedule an appt with your surgeon and get yourself
scoped. Wishing you the best ~~ Dana

I am coming to Harry's defense. What he said is true. If by 4 years out
you don't know how to use the pouch then you are in trouble. If you think
it there is a medical reason, then go see your doctor. If you are eating
too much, take responsibility for that and go back to the basics. It is a
fact that the pouch stretches out some as time goes by. You have to learn
what and how much to eat. I don't consider Harry's answer to be negative
at all. It was truthful, just not sugar-coated. Support may be given in
many different ways.

Teresa: I am glad you wrote. I am almost 3 years out, and am always
concerned that I will gain weight. I watch what I eat, but not as well as
I could. It is difficult. Obesity is a head issue with a body
consequence, and that never changes. I will always be obese, even though I
am currently at 130 pounds. The lust for food has not changed in my head,
I have to fight it every day. I happen to think Harry gave you the most
compassionate advice. It was to the point, and although it can hurt to
hear, it can redirect your path if you listen and heed the advice. I think
it begins with the doctor, check out everything and be sure you are good
physically, then make a food plan, join weight watchers or something else
if you need to, but do something besides sitting and asking non
professionals to tell you what you already know, you need help. Exercise,
what is your exercise like? After the honeymoon period, it is water,
protein, and exercise, just like veryone else. We had surgery, it is no
miracle, but only a tool. Use your tool to your benefit. If you have
abused your tool for 4 years, the consequences may be catching up with you.
If you have done all you can to protect your tool and work with it, than
it could be mechanics. Please see your doctor, and please do some soul
searching as to how you can get your tool back on track effectively. I
wish you well, and hope you have a good outcome. Patricia P

I was 4 yrs. post op also and started gaining weight back at a rapid rate.
I no longer was experiencing that feeling of fullness that I had grown to
rely on. My dr. did a barium swallow test and found that I had a fistula
going from my new stomach into the old stomach, which was allowing all the
food to go back into the original stomach. I was also experiencing
abdominal pain from it. I had a revision surgery 2 weeks ago to correct
the problem, so far so good. I would check for any mechanical problems
before you proceed with anything else. Talk to your surgeon!!
