Question:
Should i be dumping
If having something with more than 10 grams of sugar makes you dump, then why don't I dump on Gatorade. It has 14 grams per serving and 35 grams per bottle (little bottle). Also if fat makes you dump, then why don't I dump from a strip of bacon (which has 11 grams of fat per serving). — PoohBearNC (posted on August 8, 2006)

I had a VBG so I do not have to worry about the dumping thing. But my
research before surgery taught me EVERY SINGLE PERSON DUMPS FOR A DIFFERENT
REASON. Everyone has a different tolerance. Some people never dump some
people will always dump. I do not think I have met 2 people who dump for
the same reasons.

The first person that posted an answer is totally correct. My mom had the
surgery several years ago and can not tolerate ANY sugar without dumping.
In addition, she can NOT drink even a sip of fluids while eating or she
gets sick. Me...on the otherhand...can tolerate up to 7-8 grams of sugar
per serving....and can drink liquids went eating...which I don't do
regularly. Everyone is different....!!!

Yup - basically what they said. In addition, I can have some things with
more sugar than I should ever have tried and be fine, while others in
smaller quantities make me sick. No rhyme or reason really. For instance,
I can eat a Snickers bar (I had one during my last PMS bout...don't make a
habit of it) and not dump. Put a tiny bowl of any cereal in front of me
and it will make me sick in less than 15 minutes. I can have cheesecake
and be fine. But biscuits and gravy make me incredibly sick. What I have
learned to do is if I just HAVE to have something that makes me sick, I
will have a taste of it and stop at one or two bites. If I go for more, I
know what will happen. As for the Gatorade, I would recommend you ditch
that for a low-sugar drink. If you need electrolytes, you can find those
sugar free now, as well as you can just add 1/4 tsp of Morton's light salt
to the drink and get the same balance. Just because you CAN eat or drink
something doesn't mean you should. I'm usually pretty liberal about
everyone finding their own way to maintain their weight loss, but one thing
I personally feel is that when you drink your calories on a regular basis
you are doing yourself a disservice because it's easy to gain weight on
liquid calories. As for the fat, well, I dumped on it quite a bit early on
but don't so much now. Occasionally I will still get sick though, but not
as often as before. Just remember, testing your limits is one thing, but
pushing them on a consistent basis can be the kiss of death.

Everyone has a different tolerance and has different things that make them
dump. As one peron rerplied, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it!

The interesting thing I noted was what else I had to eat with the meal. On
an empty stomach I react more. If I eat a bite of desert shortly after
dinner with protein it seems not to affect me.

Most find sugar and fat combo is worse, great example is ice cream. Yeah if
you eat protein first you can tolerate more sugar. Its very individual and
the more you eat the more tolerant you can become:(
