Well, I can answer about the hot flashes, however one of our WL patients recently had surgery and she is going through the shakes, and the doctor told her to increase her protein. You might want to try that.

Don't you also get the sweats and shakes from too much sugar and sugar alchol? I thought that is what our Nurse in Pre-Op class said.

It could be dumping or most likely you are not drinking enough water. Dehydration will cause that in our bodies & it is telling you it needs water. I also believe you could also be eating too many carbs & not enough protein. without what kinds of foods you are eating & what your day looks like. Have no idea. Try adding water & protien if that does not help call your Doc & have your Vitamin levels checked.

When I was a little over a year out I thought the hot flashes were me going through early menopause but they went away and I figured that they were just my body changing, that's probally what your going through. Good luck.

I feel like that when I eat things I shouldn't - simple carbs, etc. Could that be it? Dee

Look up reactive hypoglycemia. That seems to be one of the long term effects of RNy style surgeries. The only downside that I can see so far (12 yrs). There's quite a bit of discussion on this on the Grad list, but the consensus is that we all carry PB crackers. The cracker hits fast, like sugar, the PB works in slow motion. Out of all the things I've tried (candy, OJ, protein supp, food protein), nothing stops it or brings me back as quickly as the PB on cheap white bread or PB crackers. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG

Yup - I second what Michelle says. I just went through the longest period of trying to figure this out. Thought I was going through early menopause. Come to find out this is what they call "late dumping syndrome" which is essentially hypoglycemia. I didn't realize how serious it could get until I had a nurse here on OH who has the same problem wrote me to enlighten me. Once I got the full spectrum of what it was, it has become easier to handle. Generally it's brought on, at least for me, by eating things that are too high in carbs, but that don't cause me an immediate dump. About 3 hours later I find I get the whole thing - hot flashes and shakey. I also feel famished and desperate to eat....now I know why. This went on for a long time before I figured it out - to the point where I actually passed out in the shower one time when it hit. I carry something that will quickly bring my blood sugar up but am careful about how much of it I eat. I think the peanut butter crackers is a good one to carry, but I will also sometimes combat it with a handful of Skittles or a cookie. Just enough to bring me back to normal. Then when I'm feeling better, I make sure to top it off with a little protein to help temper it. Once I knew what exactly it was, I am now able to catch it at the onset rather than realizing it when I'm into the full blown attack. Many wls patients experience this problem, and the key is eating right and keeping something with you for when it starts to happen. I've been pretty good at recognizing it now, so the less time that lapses from the onset to the full blown attack, the better. Dina

It could be dumping but I also watched an episode of Oprah where some women get menopause in their 30s!! That scared the bejeezuz outta me since I'm 37 and haven't had a child yet (hopefully will start trying in the next year or so).
