You should qualify since your BMI is above 40. Mine was 39 with
hypertension. I was denied 5 years ago with Aetna because I didnt have a 5
year weight history with a doctor. I was recently approved in December- it
only took two weeks. Just make sure your insurance application is complete-
for instance I did not know that they required a recent thyroid test
result. Your surgeon's office should help you with this. Good Luck!

Aetna will approve IF you have had a physician supervised diet for the
last 6 months or a 3 month pre-operative program. I was lucky because I
went to Neweigh in Houston and they handled all the paperwork and had a
pre-operative program all set up. It goes by fast. Try and find a MD
whose office will do all the paperwork and is familiar with Aetna 's
requirements. Do not get discouraged, if you have to do the 6 month
supervised diet and don't worry that if you lose weight you won't qualify
anymore. Usually, as soon you finish and resubmit you will get approved in
a week or two.

I had open RNY in June of 2002. Aetna covered it all at first request. My
BMI was 41 and I had no other significant problems. I did not have even a
weight loss history....only an appointment documented a year earlier that I
had "spoke" about weight loss with my physician.
