My surgeon recommends keeping my calories under 1200 per day and to get in 50 grams of protein. I don't count carbs since I concentrate on the protein grams and calories. I think if you do that, you won't have a lot of calories left to overdo carbs.

That totally depends on what type of 'diet' you want to be following. Max carbs is NOt essential to sucessful wls. You can do weight watchers 3 years post and just as sucessfull as someone doing Atkins.

My bariatric nutritionist said to keep my under 90 grams of carbs per day. That is actually more than you think.

It depends. everybody is different. I work out a lot and aim for about 1500 - 1600 cals a day. I was recommended by a dietician to go for a ratio of calories from 40% carbs, 30% protein, 30 % fats. on 1500 cals a day, (which I maintain nicely at) the calorie ratio recommended to me as a person who works out regularly 4-6 times a week for at least an hour each time - 40% carbs (4 calories /gram) , 30% protein (4 calories /gram) 30% fats (9calories /gram) that is 150 grams of carbs, 112.5 grams of protein, and 50 grams of fat.

I wanted to add, if you are on 1200 calories a day and 50 grams of protein, which is a reasonable amount for most women, Protein =4 cals/gram, carbs = 4 cals/gram, and fats are 9 cals/gram. 50 grams of protein is 200 calories, so that leaves another 1000 cals a day to work with. On my ratio, 1200 cals a day would be 120 grams of carbs, 90 grams of protein, and 40 grams of fat. the program set up for me is a fairly lower carb plan(most people are recommended 60% of their cals from carbs) for some one who is trying to build muscle, and cut fat.

To jumpstart weight loss, but understanding that it would not be a good long-term solution, think about trying to keep your daily carb intake to below 40 grams per day. But, the difficulty for many of us is that our supplements all contain some carbs. For me, I have found it imperative to count carbs even after 3+ years out as my body is very sensitive to the cravings excess carb consumption produces. Also, for me, I have found that it is just easier to have my bright line rules concerning carbohydrate content of what I consume. As a result, I try to keep myself to about 60-70 grams of carb per day. Good luck jump-starting your weight loss.

I am 11.5 yrs out and stick with 180g protein in supplement, no more than single digit sugar per meal (my supps are 0g sugar). Never counted carbs, calories or fats. I would refer you to the Grad list for some ideas on getting going again since you are a few years out. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG

My surgeon said to basically do Atkins for the rest of my life. I really just concentrate on getting my protien in, and then I have little room for carbs. I try to get my carbs in the kind that fill me up, like veggies. I eat whole grains.
