Why do some people have to have their gallblader removed during WLS?

My sugeon is removing mine because it is very likely you will get gallstones due to WLS.

Mine was removed during my open RNY because an abdominal ultrasound in pre-op testing showed that it was full of gallstones. During an RNY my surgeon removes a diseased gall bladder and does not remove if it's OK.

This is directly from my surgeon's letter to my insurance company: "Half the patients will have gallbladder disease when we get in there and of course we would remove it. If we leave the normal looking gallbladders in, half of those people are back later to have their gallbladders out. Since there are no significant side-effects we therefore recommend all patients have their gallbladder removed at the same time." I hope this helps!

I did not have my gallbladder removed during surgery but my doctor put me on actigall. I will be on it twice a day for 6 months to prevent the formation or to dissolve any beginning gallstones. Best of luck
