Question:
How do you stop the excessive production of mucus and saliva after a meal?
After 30 minutes with some meals I produce an excessive amount of saliva and mucus which causes me to vomit for 3 to 4 hours. I do not loose the food only tremendous amounts of mucus. It is starting to get to me. I would appreciate any help? Thank You. — John F. L. (posted on October 1, 1999)

I only had this problem when I over ate. I usually threw up
saliva, but then the food too! At least you're keeping the
food down. I say back off on the amounts you are eating.

I've had the same problem since 1983. If I eat as much as 1/2 tsp too much
that happens. It's best to just let the mucous collect in your mouth and
delicately dispose of it (if you know what I mean). Avoiding foods with
creamy consistency seems to help a lot. Anything like pudding or ice cream
within a few hours of eating a meal makes it worse. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you're probably over eating, or maybe introducing a consistancy
your tummmy isn't ready for yet. back off a little and see if it doesn't
help. At five weeks, it can take some expiermentation to see whats gonna
work..I wasn't eating any solids at 5 weeks, but I've seen others do it and
handle it OK..whenever I DID try, I would get excessive saliva..it's VERY
uncomfortable..Good luck..

:) I responded to the other post ... please read up ... take it slowly ...
you're eating too fast, that's what's causing this!

I am also 5 weeks post op and am experiencing the saliva/mucus thing. I
don't know exactly what is causing it and the only way that I have found to
reduce the production is to keep my meals lighter and by light I mean I
have to take one bite and chew it slowly and not take another bite for
about 5-10 minutes and keep my portions really small. Also, mixing foods
tends to aggravate my stomach. The other night I had boiled chicken, green
beans, and mashed potatoes. I had a little of each. Didn't work. So,
after all the mucus and also losing my dinner, I tried it again the next
day except this time I just had green beans. It worked. Then another meal
was just a few bites of chicken. That worked, too. So, I don't know if I
have found the solution or just the solution that works for me. I have no
problem keeping salty things down but I tried to limit my sodium intake as
well. I drink a lot of water throughout the day and that has helped, too.
I wish I knew exactly what causes it but I don't. I hope I have helped you
out in some way. Keep up the good work and drop me a line if you'd like to
so we can support each other since we are at the same stage. Bye!

Hi John, I have been experiencing the same thing since I had my Gastric
Bypass almost two years ago. I usually get it when I forget to drink water
before a meal to flush out the pouch, or if I eat to fast and don't chew
well enough. I get, what they call airblock. As soon as I vomit up the
mucus and sometimes some of the food I am able to burp. The mucus acts like
a plug and won't let the air out. It really is annoying, I seem to always
get it when we go out to eat in resturants. Maybe it is caused by nerves. I
don't know .
