Question:
IS IT TRUE RNY PATIENTS CAN NEVER EAT SWEETS AGAIN?

NOT EVEN THE OCCASIONAL BITE OR TWO OF CAKE OR PIE? NEVER? REALLY?    — Lisa L. (posted on January 22, 2010)

No this is not true. Someone who doesn't deal with dumping syndrome (me included) still indulge once and a while. I live by everything in moderation. Whereas I was eating crap all of the time pre-wls, I now have a treat once or twice a month. IF you do dump, there are many sugar free treats (does not mean calorie free) that you can substitute in place of regular treats.

Not true at all! I can tolerate a bite or two of sweets, but the truth is I don't really want them that often anymore. They don't taste right to me, most things are TOO sweet. I can eat a whole cookie or two though. I love cookies! :)

If you haven't had your surgery yet, you might want to make sure you can handle the restrictions of food after surgery. In your previous question you asked about bread and steak and this question about sweets. You will be able to eat what you want - you won't be on a diet, however you are very worried about what you may not be able to eat again. This is a lifestyle change. I eat steak, bread, and sweets, although it is very rarely and very sparingly. Please don't worry about what you won't be able to do and think about the healthy practices you will gain. It isn't a magic thing - you still have to work at it and it isn't easy. I suggest you wait on surgery until you are confident you can make these lifelong changes. Sadly I know people who have gained all their weight back and more because they weren't ready. I wouldn't want that to happen to anyone. Just be sure! Good luck

Had RNY 2 years ago. I eat those little candy bars sometimes...Just don't get in the habit of eating them. But I loved chocolate pre and post surgery...And a little chocolate doesn't hurt me. But I wouldn't even try it at all for the first year or so..You need to get in the habit of eating right and making it a habit...I try not to eat sweets but a bite or two when eating pies, cakes etc because I do dump easily....But you can eat sweets, but just be careful and you will learn how much you can have...Just being honest and up front,,,I know you shouldn't eat sweets but somewhere down the road people will..

Yea I agree with Dawn. You need to do some soul searching before your surgery. I can eat what I want and I am less than a year out but I have also lost over 100 pounds so you can see that I am NOT eating cake and those little candy bars! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO YOUR NEW BODY! I had pumpkin pie and a few other nice holiday favs,It was lovely but you don't go into this thinking about all the stuff you can't have. You have to WANTING to not have these things anymore.

I was bad and the same DAY, AFTER SURGERY I ate some apple cobbler off of my wife's tray. Sweets have never been a problem to me, and I had a nice steak twice this month. What I can't eat comfortably is greasy foods and peanut butter. Spicy is great, fried foods, if not greasy is fine and I can eat more regular than sugar-free because manitol, sorbitol, etc. are excellent laxatives. I said can, but I don't. There was a reason I had the surgery, and after a year and a half I am still losing, but was 426 and am 255 before loose skin removal. I have lost at least 25-30 inches off my waist, and am 200% healthier than before. Just do it. Everyone is different and only you will be able to determine what you can and WILL eat. If you are going to see how much and how many things you can eat, you have very little chance of NOT sabotaging your surgery. It can change your life...but YOU have to let it do so. No one is going to force you to do anything. It's a tool, not a free ride to slender. You have to work at it, even after gbs. Get into exercise and into your new body. Let that give you the satisfaction and comfort you formally sought from food. I promise you, if you do this, you will never regret it.

Some of us can eat sweets, but not a good practice to get into. Remember what got you to the point of surgery in the first place. I don't have any problem with sweets things, but limit it to a couple of times a month as a special treat only. I love a good cold beer, but tried one after 6 mos post surgery and you know, I wasn't comfortable after drinking 1/2 of it and now have no interest in beer. Your tastes will change. Things that you think you will miss, you may not. Think about the benefits of having a healthy body. People will compliment you on how good you look and that positive reinforcement will spur you to maintain the healthy eating that is the best for you.

I had my surgery on August 13, 2009, so far I have lost 98 lbs, and I do not want or crave sugar. I made a decision to have major surgery so I can be thin, I do not want to gain weight. As so many have said, this WLS is a tool, you must change your mind to maintain the weight loss.

It is true for some people but not all. I do not have a problem with sweets but some days I wish I did. It would make it much less of a temptation. There are many sugar free sweets you can have anyways.

NO but those that were sugarholics may find that SWEET is not tasty any more. Sugar substitutes are not recommended but using RAW SUGAR may be possible in SMALL quantities.
