Question:
How do you deal with the hair loss and when does it grow back?

I am six months out and am losing lots of my hair from the roots. I was told this is the worse it will be and it will grow back but every time I shampoo there is more and more hair in my hands and in the drain. What can I do?    — edgehanger (posted on June 21, 2009)

It will get better! I did the same thing and my niece who is a hairdresser does alot of hair for cancer patients told me to use Nurti-Ox shampoo and conditioner (two seperate bottles) found at Sally's. It cost about 11.00 for both of them unless you have a membership card and its 20% cheaper. Membership is $5.00. It takes about a month but you will notice your hair is thicker and coming back sooner. I tried the same thing everyone else tried but it made my new stomach hurt. I have lost 224 in 2 years and my hair looks great just dealing with skin irritation but hey its all worth it. Good Luck!

Try Nixxon. The stylist gets it. It is a 3 part system (shampoo, conditioner and a therapy that goes on. It works. It is a bit more than reg. shampoo but well worth it. Good luck.

My Dr. had me increase the amount of biotin I was taking.

I had RNY 12/9/2009, my hair loss started about 2 months post op. I take a hair, skin and nail vitamin, increased my biotin to 3500 mcg per day and use Nioxin Shampoo, Conditioner and Treatment. My hair is still falling out like crazy! I do see slight evidence of it growing back, but it's slow and just started. I invested in a good drain cover for the drain and I wash my hair less frequently.(I'd rather spend my money on vitamins that a plumber..LOL.) I keep my chin up by hoping that each hair I loose weighs .25 lbs........lol. My NUT assures me that no one has ever gone bald. I'd sure hate to be her first. Know that you are not alone...best of luck to you!

hi! you will notice new growth soon, the hair falls out, but it comes right back. Keep your protein levels up and try the biotin. I took 5000mcg every other day. it gets better, don't worry...stress causes it to fall out too!best of luck! hugs, kim

Mine didn't start falling out till four months out. I tried using a suggestion of Nioxin shampoo/conditioner, but it's still coming out anyways. I think maybe it's inevitable. I think I let my protein drop a little and that could be the cause, but I'm back on track now. You'll see new growth coming back immediately and I understand it only lasts a few months. It's all worth it in the end :o)

Increase your protien intake. Your Hair will grow back thicker than before.

I have heard that getting in all your required protien is key to minimal hair loss. Being a cosmetologist however, (lol) 30% of everyones hair is constantly falling out and replacing itself with new growth. That might make you feel a bit better! =) But I would def suggest a good drain cover and a product called Murad it comes from your stylist and is a hair regrowth treatment. be careful it grows hair wherever it drips lol it is a great product if interested but a bit pricy! good luck!

My hair started falling out about the same time as yours and it sounds like about the same rate. I even tried not washing my hair as often but it didn't help. I work for a dermatologist who told me that when the body has stressors whether they be physical or pschological the hair can fall out. At this time the follicles "hybernate" and then start to rejunvenate about 4 months later. He told me that it may come in a little finer than before and it has but with an increase in Biotin dosage and makuing sure that I get enough protein, it looks pretty good now and I am 16 month post-op. Most shampoos like the Nioxin only make the hair look thicker but does not make hair grow. Rogaine is something that needs to be an ongoing thing if you chose to use it and it is really messy. I definitely can relate as I was in tears several mornings after shampooing and the way the light would shine on my scalp to look like I was a cancer patient. Be patient and hang in there!!! :-)

a deficiency in protein, iron, and zinc is what depletes your hair. so i suggest investing in some of these. my hair hasn't fallen out yet and i have beeen experimenting wtih these plus biotin. i'm looking into using some preemptive rogaine and maybe buying a few hair pieces. good luck.
