Question:
I have gained weight
Up about 8# up since my last appointment and my scheduled pre-op appointment 4/8. It has been 2 months, and I have over-ate, but also my insulin dose has increased. I read that surgery can be cancelled based on weight gain. I am currently watching my weight very carefully, but there is a limit on what 2 weeks can accomplish. Your thoughts? — Kathe1123inKC (posted on March 28, 2009)

Continue to do your best. The pre-op time is so difficult especially since
you've had an increase in insulin. Call the nutritionist at your surgeons
office and discuss options. Are you exercising? Even using hand weights
while sitting can provide some muscle toning and improved use of insulin in
sugar metabolism. Not all surgeons will cancel surgery but they do want to
see weight loss (even a little) because it lowers your surgical risk by
shrinking the liver and loosening the connections of the small intestine
that has to be moved (assuming you're having rny, it still helps the other
surgeries as well). Hang in there and talk to your surgeons office. 2 weeks
is a short time but every little bit helps. Kevin
