Question:
Pain from Iron?
I am 10 months out and iron has started to make my stomach hurt for several hours. Anyone experience this and what did you do? — omcav (posted on January 1, 2009)

Hi, there are two types of iron one can take, I think the ferrous iron is
the one that is gastric upsetting. My mother has the same problem and I
sent her the articles on the two types....she tried the second type and
found it didn't cause gastric upset. You can research it on the internet.

Try Carbonyl Iron. I buy the brand Feosol from wally world. It's not
pricey and is easier on the stomach.

Yes...Ferrous sulfate is awful on the RNY system and doesn't get absorbed
efficiently despite all the symptoms it causes...I quit taking my iron
after year two and was anemic by year 4...Took carbonyl iron after a ton of
research and I am no longer anemic...You can find carbonyl more readily as
it is FINALLY begining to catch on...I found several brands now that are
cheap enough to use the very high dose I take personally...I chew 250mg
which is 10 x 25 mg pills with chewable Vit C to help absorb the iron. It
does not have a metallic or bloody flavor...and is non toxic in very high
doses...
I get a sweet chewable one from Vitalady.com called Tender Iron...I've also
seen another version with the same name in the grocery store and at the
Military Exchange or commissary they have one called "Perfect
Iron" by a company called Sundown...They are not sweetened but I chew
them with flavored Vit C and they are not too bad...Taste a little like
dirt is all! LOL THEY WORK!!!! Got me out of having to get iron
infusions!
