You have heard from who? I did not have to go on any pre-op
diets...although I was asked by my surgeon to try to lose 10-20 lbs to
shrink my liver 1 month before surgery and make it easier on him to
operate...I lost 10...and all went well...It does help to lose weight prior
to surgery, but did you hear this from other WLS people or your surgeon?

From other WLS. I heard low carb two weeks before, and I also have heard
just do not eat or drink anything but water and clear fluids three days
before.

A lot of times surgeons suggest you go on a diet before surgery to make it
easier on you afterwards. They suggest you start taking the protein shake
to get your body ready, and also so you can be use to taking it. I never
did, but a lot of people I know have gone on liquid diets a week or two
before surgery so the change isn't so hard after surgery.
Good Luck!

It varies per surgeon. Just follow his directions. For a reference you can
also pick up weight loss surgeries for dummies. It has sample menu for
different phases.

I am also scheduled for surgery on 12/30! I have to do a 2 week pre-op
diet per my surgeon which consists of 1 meal and 2-3 protein shakes. He
puts us on this to shrink the liver to make it as small as possible for the
surgery. It will be a very difficult Christmas but I can't wait for the
results! Good luck to you!

Hi. I had the RNY last March. My doctor put me on a 7-day high protein
liquid diet. It was very hard. I lost 7 lbs during that time. Like
someone else said, it was to shrink the liver so that they can do the
surgery and reduce complications. I had to drink the slimfast high protein
low calorie shakes for 7 days straight. Rough, but worth it in the long
run looking back. Good Luck!

Yes, I had to do a Pre-Op diet before my Rouen-Y surgery. But I got all
that information the Bariatric Clinic that I went to so you may need to
check with them.

I had to go on a 7 day liquid diet 100 grams of protein but it was not
really bad.........late night munchies on the brain but i did
good........but i started protein shakes early so I could get used to the
take.........but it depends on your doc as to what type of diet you are on
if any........wishing you all the best

Call your surgeon. I was on protein shakes 3 weeks prior to surgery and
clear liquids 2 days before the procedure. I also had to drink a cleansing
solution during these 2 days to empty my bowels in preparation for the
surgery. Good luck.

Everyone has posted good advice. I am sure your surgeon will go over the
preop diet with you. If your surgeon does not mention it please ask him or
his nut what diet to follow. Good luck.

Rhonda, You really need to take your direction from your surgeon's office
at this point. Did you have pre-surgical nutrition counseling? I did. I
completed it about 2-3 months prior to the surgery. I think I lost about 15
lbs. I could have voluntarily opted to stay on that meal plan but I
didn't--except that I continued to have protein shakes for breakfast and I
tried not to go completely crazy eating foods I knew I could not have
post-rny. I gained back almost the whole 15 lbs. I did not have a diet
immediately prior to surgery but perhaps that was a decision based on my
individual case. I don't know; it never occurred to me to ask. Please
speak to your surgeon or nutritionist. Oh and best wishes on your surgery!
What a wonderful way to start the new year!

You should be taking direction from your surgeon's office.
I proposed to my surgeon that I go on the Medifast 5+1 plan, so I would
have the option of having a LapDS by losing weight and lowering my BMI.
Most (if not all) of the patients at my bariatric center have to go on
total liquids two weeks prior to surgery. This is to reduce a fatty liver,
and to test you abilty to adhere to a strict regimen.
I have heard from people at other centers that they have to do the bowel
prep thing "Go Lytely" the day before surgery to clean things
out.

You should hear it from your surgeon as to whether you need to diet of
not...but it certainly would not hurt! I wouldn't do it too soon or you
could lose weight and then gain some back as was always my biggest trouble
with diets...Still...ask your surgeon what he/she wants you to do...Not all
of us have a fatty liver...I know I did!
