Question:
Hair loss non-stop

I am 11 months post-op and my hair is falling out like crazy. I do have new growth but it is still falling out. Hoe long can I expect this??? I have increased my protien to 75g. but still shedding. (wish it was my legs and/or mustach)    — liniam (posted on November 23, 2008)

Have you had labs? Sounds like a vit deficiency or thyroid ! Don't ignore symtoms for long...they mean something is not quite right...Hair loss is normal a few months after surgery for a good 6 months...but you are nearly a year out...Go get labs so you can get that taken care of! It's usually just an extra dose of this or that and it get's better in a few weeks no trouble...But don't wait for weeks and weeks...symtoms are there to warn you...

You need your labs done. Are you taking lots of Vitamin A. that is for hair and nails. Could be low in Vit A or thyroid issues going on.

Linda, I had the same problem. I went for labs and did some research of my own. It's a vitamin deficiency. You are lacking vitamin D! GO FOR LAB WORK this can lead to more problems dow the road!

Hi, Bariatric Advantage has a Vit. D capsule that is wonderful...you get more than you need daily. What I do is open the capsule (I'm only six weeks out from surgery so I can't swallow a pill yet) and pour half of the capsule into a protein shake or even small amount of milk. It is tasteless and mixes well. But, of course, consult with your doctor and get your labs done like the others suggest. Best to you! Rebecca

Definitely follow up soon. i have been taking Biotin which has seemed to help but I knew of a girl (not a WLS pt) that lost hair similar to you and she found out that she had a pituitary tumor which can be treated if caught. Best of luck!

In addition to all the other answers, add a vitamin called hair, skin and nails. You can get it anywhere. I take 3-4 a day. My hair loss was horrible. At 10 1/2 months out, its finally under control. Do not ignore the symptoms. Consult your doctor and have labs drawn. It is not just one thing that helps, but it is a combination of everything. Good Luck!

Do you take vitamins designed for WLS patients like these? http://www.bbvitamins.com/ My surgeon includes 6 months of the multivitamins, calcium, iron, and anti-ox in his fee. I also take B-12 sublingual every day. My hair is thicker than ever. I also make sure that I eat primarily protein ...about 80-90 grams a day.

I had the same issue. I had my labs done and I was lacking Zinc. I started to take Hair Skin and Nails. The hair stopped falling out right away and is now growing back in. Good Luck!

Hi Linda, I am sorry to hear about your trouble. I am wondering what kind or protein you are using, and how much you were getting before you upped it to 75 grams per day... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jerome UNJURY (R) Protein

Sounds like you need to have some labs done. You might have a vitamin deficiency, you might need to up your protein, you might want to think about adding Biotin. I enjoyed your humor about the hair you would rather lose. Best wishes. Lisa

Linda, I've read all the responses to your problem and they're all good, but the one thing no one mentioned is BIOTEN. It is over the counter and can be found in the vitamin section of your supermarket. The other thing is lots of PROTEIN. These are the things I did to avoid hair loss and they worked for me. Give it a try. It won't hurt and is very inexpensive. Paula B.
