Question:
Liquid Vitamin question
Hi everyone...I was checking out some multi-vit's on vitacost.com and found this one that I am interested in. Nature's Plus Source of Life Liquid Multi-Vitamin & Mineral Suplement with Whole Food Tropical Fruit Flavor -- I'd just like to know if anyone has tried it or if they know anything about it. I am 7 mos post op RNY. Thank you so much in advance. — Mary G. (posted on October 22, 2008)

i know liquid vitamins are attractive to those after RNY, however, you
should know that all vitamins break down in solution. so no matter what
the label says the % of vitmins and minerals are in each dose, that %
lowers as time goes by. the best vitamins and minerals are in the solid
form. i know they are harder to digest, but you can look for vitamins that
are manufactured in gelitin capsules. they break down easily and quickly
and allow the granulated vits and mins to absorb quickly into the blood
stream without discomfort. we do manufacture that kind of vitamin/mineral,
but we are currently sold out. we should be restocked in 4-5 weeks. so if
you want to try ours after your liquid vitamin, just go to
www.metabolicnutrition.com and look up quidprim in the product section.

Weigh your responses carefully...
I spend a lot of money at Vitacost.com and think they offer good products
and their service is great. I've always heard that a higher percentage of
liquid vitamins go into ones body than do the solid forms. You may want to
do your own research on that one or ask the nutrionist at the doctor's
office. Just make sure you have enough calcium, b12 and iron in whatever it
is you take. Iron usually has to be taken by its self to work properly.
Happy hunting. Anita

The best "liquid" vitamin / mineral supplement for the money is
VEMMA. It is in a "mangosteen" base along with aloe vera and
green tea . It has 1000 IU of vitamin D3, very important for calcium
absorption. Go to www.TrySomeVemma.com Good luck

Hi Mary, Thanks a lot for posting this. I had not heard either of the
liquid vitamins nor the web site. Again, thanks for the info! All the best,

I looked at the ingredient list and decided that this is not a liquid
vitamin I personally would spend $22 a month on. Reason...RNYers malabsorb
fats...This means that fat soluble vits (A,E,D and K) need fat to dissolve
in the small intestines. RNYers small intestines are bypassed...There is
no Vit K in this liquid and Vits A, D and E are fat soluble forms of the
vits we need in Dry/Water soluble forms. While the Calcium was from
citrate it was only 5% your recommended daily amount. (you need to supp CC
with Vit D3 seperately AT LEAST twice a day anyway for your own GOOD!) For
me personally this liquid too pricy when Centrums offer the same
"wrong" vits for only 7 bucks...I might certainly try it if I had
not had RNY...However the vits I mentioned are the vits RNYers most
frequenly become deficient in several years post op when the RNY body uses
its bodies vitamin stores and the CORRECT form of these vits are not
replaced adequately. This has happened to me at year 4. I have spent
nearly a year getting out of malnutrition because NOONE told me these
things and I had a GREAT nutritionist, otherwise. I have learned this on
my own thru experience. Often just one vit deficiency if left deficiet,
can set off a chain reaction in the body and leave you malnourished and
with irreversible damage...Prevention is sooooo important. I'm not a
nutritionist...I'm not a doc and I do not sell vitamins as income! I am
just a person who learned this the hard way! I was defiecient or seriously
low in Vits A, E, D, Zinc, Magnesium, Selenium and I was anemic (Iron def)
All at once!!!! By the time I realised I was as sick as I was (no huge side
effects...just mild stuff) My doc put me on bed rest for two months! I was
not to get my heart rate up or get stressed for any reason! Because by
this time, I had put my heart and brain in serious danger! I was very lucky
I went in when I did...and I was able to reverse my defs by supplementing
the vits in the best forms...You want to talk COSTLY to do it this way?
WOW!!!!! PLEASE choose a good vit even if you have to buy them all seperate
to get the RIGHT ones...PLEASE look up these things and just be certain you
are getting LABS and stay on top of them and make sure you are not slowly
dropping! (compare last labs with new ones!) ...Don't wait til your levels
are low/normal....start working on raising/maintaining your vit levels (vit
stores) so that they stay healthy and full! If you can't find an ingredient
list with specific forms and amounts of vits used...DO NOT PURCHASE! And
that is only half of it! The important half...but half! I do LOVE Nature's
Plus Chewable Iron (As amino acid chelate) though! I only suggest you look
further and compare more vits before choosing this one. I take many of my
vits individually and that gets quite expensive...I am currently looking to
change my chewable vit for some of the same reasons I wouldn't use this
liquid...However Centrums are 7 bucks a month and my non RNY family uses
them...I have YET to find a "perfect" vit supp where I can give
up taking my vits individually to make sure I stay healthy. I only JUST
recently learned that the ingredient list MUST say what forms of vits are
used...Since I learned this I want to find a better vit supp than the
Centrum chewables that I use because I have to supplement so many vits to
get the right ones that it's just not even worth 7 bucks a month for the
vits I can absorb efficiently. This is just my non-medical opinion based on
my personal experience with vits and deficiencies.
Good luck!
