Question:
ITCHY!

I know this is an odd question, but I am 2 weeks post op and extremely itchy all over my body. I can't stop scratching and now I have red nail marks all over. Does this just mean I am adjusting to things? I need more water? Or maybe my skin is just dry? Any ideas?    — tammyB1976 (posted on August 30, 2008)

Hi Tammy, You could be experiencing a reaction to medication or anything new in your life. It could be dry skin and drinking more water will help that. I would contact my doctor about this. It is worth making the call. Best of luck. Mary-Anne

Many women complain about dry skin after surgery. Your nutritional level has changed, and this may be one of the results. My support group leader swears by fish oil, in capsules, stating she noticed a noticeable change in her skin in about 7-10 days. This might help you too. DAVE

Drink lots of water to flush out the toxins which your body was storing in your fat and now has to let go of. Omega three fish oils a definite plus! Hope it's better soon.

Hi.... many patients are given lortab-vicodin elixer immediately post-op, and it is known more times than not to cause severe itching. If this isnt the case for you, try benadryl caps, but remember to cut them open and mx with maybe 1/4 cup of crystal light-and contact the surgeon. Good luck and a big congrats on your new journey! First I would ask if you are still on any pain meds. That can cause itching. Second, I would think, not drinking enough. I had to used alot of moisturizer and at almost 9 months out, I still do, because of not getting enough fluids. You can't get too much. But usually not enough. And of course clear water is best to hydrate. And, yes things are changing. You wil go thru alot of things as you lose weight. Hair loss, dry skin, and all the other things you've probably read about. Good luck to ya, drink up!

Aloha, It could be that you are allergic to the tape. What kind of tape did the doctors tape you up with. I am allergic to plastic, latex, clear and paper tape. The only one that I don't get allergic reactions from is Silk tape. Hope this helps. Kemalani

This sounds crazy, but every time I drop weight in the past I am itchy! Especially in my stomach where I carry most of my wt. Sometimes all over my body. I have done this for years and it seems crazy, but it is a real feeling I get and sometimes I even have to take benadryl at night when it is too itchy to sleep. I have never asked a doctor about it. I thought people only get itchy when they "gained wt" and were getting stretch marks. But, not me!!!! Weird, but true! Gina

If you had morphine after surgery... it might still be a reaction to that (I did the same thing in a previous surgery). Now I tell the doctors I have an allergy to morphine... no more scratching... that's a terrible feeling! Plus, my skin is really dry too. I think it's probably natural after this surgery. I think Fish Oil is supposed to help with that. Good Luck!

Changing hormone levels can cause dry, itchy skin too. Having surgery will cause a change in hormone levels as estrogen is released along with the fat. Have a talk with your pcp and/or your ob/gyn and see what they have to say.

Tammy the anesthetic (not sure if I spelled correctly) makes your skin very dry. I was itchy flacky and peeling all over. Use lots of lotion and get your fluids in. It will take a couple of weeks to go away.

Hi Tammy, I am 3 1/2 weeks out and have the same thing! My belly, my shoulders and my hips all itch! I know I"m not hydrating enough, so I'm trying to make sure I drink all my water and am using lots of lotion. As far as the hormone deal, I was lucky enough to get my period for the 2nd time this month. All kinds of neat changes going on!
