Frequent diarrhea 1 week post of
Hi I am 1 week post op and since last Wednesday I have been having frequent bowel movements mostly liquid (after all i am only eating jello and broth). One time was real bad and i did not make it to bathroom.I called dr's office and she said that it was normal but if it happened bad light that again to call her back. well it let up, of course. I have still been going 4-5 times daily. Tonight it has been about 3 times in an hour. I am drinking plenty of water. just wondered if this happened to anyone else? — bikermama (posted on May 12, 2008)

This is very common. I am 14 weeks out and I still go quite often, but it
does slow down with more solid foods, when you get there. Don't rush it.
Keep drinking the water and stay hydrated and make sure you keep your
protien up. Your doing great!!! Just remember this new life change means
treating your body right. Exercise as soon as you are clear to and you are
well on your way to a wonderful adventure....LIFE!!!

I am 3 weeks post-op and have had some problems like your as well. At my
post-op diet class that was brought up by several people and the dietician
said it may be due to our vitamins. If you are taking a vitamin that
causes it you might want to see if switching to another kind helps you any.
Other-wise, I'm sure w/ our digestive systems going through such a
tremendous change that it will take a while to find our new
"normal".

I had the same problem for 3 weeks. Others with the same RNY from the same
doctor complained about Constipation, but the doc tells me that is the diet
that each of us actually eats that determines how stable the bowel
movements are after the 3 or 4th week. I am glad that I am now very
normal. Be sure to stay or get to 100 oz of water a day. I think that
your system will balance out shortly, but diareia is better than
constapations. Best of success to you.

When I had my RNY 5 years ago I asked the same question and was told water
in=water out. It will get better when you go to more solid foods.

Hey, I also am 1 week out and this has been my ONLY discomfort. I have to
make sure I know where the bathroom is at all times ! They say it will get
better. I sure hope it does SOON!

I had RNY and had very similar problem - the pain was so bad I wanted to
crawl in a ball. My Nutritrionist said to try cream of rice ceral and a
banana blended in my shake (only half) and to try probyotics once a day
since you can't get from yogurt just yet. I tried all those things and it
stopped after a day. I really think it was was the cominbination of all
but the pain went away and the urge to BM when you really had nothing left
to give. Also, drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated - very
important. I hope this helps.

Fiber...fiber...fiber!!! Of course, you need to ask your doc about this
before you do it, since you are so "new."
Fiber is a bowel regulator... when you are constipated, the fiber absorbs
water which makes your stool bigger, softer, and easier to pass. When
you've got diarrhea/lose stools, it absorbs water, making stools
firmer/bulkier, thus easier to "control" and pass.
I'd go with something like fibersure or benefiber... its a powder you mix
into liquid, can't taste it, doesn't get gritty like metamucil or psyllium
does.
But do check with your doc first.
Good luck.
