Question:
using pepto-bismol

Does anyone use pepto-bismol after eating? I tried eating mashed sweet potatoes and some refried beans, as someone had suggested. But as usual, I got a stomach, but did not throw up.I'm five weeks out. Thanks.    — oldchevys (posted on March 11, 2008)

Did you have the RNY gastric bypass or the Duodenal Switch? I had DS and I take Pepto but if you had the RNY you should NOT take Pepto or any NSAIDs.

I never heard that Pepto (which doesn't contain sugar) is necessarily bad following RNY. Of course, the real question is what was it about the mashed sweet potato and refried beans that would cause you so much stomach upset so soon after RNY. I'm guessing that the foods are dense, and not really good sources of protein, so your body had trouble processing them. Also, there could have been a high fat content that taxed your system a little. For a soft source of protein, think about chili that you might want to puree, or make a quick chicken salad.

Last time I read the label on Pepto Bisomol, it had a lot of aspirin in it, so no.

That was on my big No-NO list, as per my doctor. He said it was bad for my pouch and GI tract. I only take Tums and Pepcid. Check with your doctor first before you do it again, I am sure he can recommend something else for you, but it will probably not be pepto. Good luck.

My doctor says no starches (sweet potatoes & beans) until Stage 5 because your stomach is still healing (beans cause gas) and becauses starches are high in carbs. Hope this helps.

Not sure about the pepto, be careful with the beans. They gave me lots of belly gas. Especially that soon after surgery.

I was told in a meeting today that beans are not good in the beginning because of the outer casing of the bean. It just might block your bowel this early. Please get more nutrition advise for newbies like us. And good luck to you. Sherri K

Russ, sounds like your are rushing it a bit. My opinion you are not out that long to be doing the refried beans yet. You have to remember that your stomach is as big as your thumb. Do you think your eating too much? I couldn't eat hardly anything let alone refried beans. Maybe later. Remember to eat little and SLOW !!! When I eat too much or too fast I feel like I am having a heart attack! I slowed it down and I am fine. I will take a bite and go do something. then 5 minutes later do another bite. then i am full. Always check with your Dr. as I do. I am out 13 months and have lost 252 Lbs. If you want to keep in touch, E me soon. Bobby [email protected]
